The Commonwealth Games are IMO of the same relevance as regional championships. It's just a group of countries that have something in common - whether it's location in the same region or having been colonised by the same country. In some sports, you will have competitors that would also dominate at the global level; in most sports, you will miss important competitors because the usual (world) champions or record holders don't come from this limited group of participating nations.
I'll enjoy watching some of the sports, just because I like watching those sports and I do want the Kiwis to perform well. But I won't attach much importance to many of the results because the athletes won't always compete against the best in world.

@tim from the bidding for the 2022 Games.
Two cities initially launched bids for the games; Durban, South Africa and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton withdrew its bid in February 2015, leaving Durban as the only bid to go forward to CGF General Assembly in September 2015. The coastal South African city of Durban initially secured the right to host the games, as they were the sole bidder for the event. It was reported in February 2017 that Durban may be unable to host the games due to financial constraints. This was confirmed one month later on 13 March 2017 when the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) stripped Durban of their rights to host the games.

I looked at tickets to the Aus v NZ basketball game here in Cairns. But i couldn't get my regular seats, and they wanted $90 for the family to sit in the nosebleeds. Fuck that. I don't sit in no nosebleeds at the Convention Centre.
So i am going to the Harlem Globetrotters later in the month instead.
@raznomore i just googled Gold Coast kiwi douchebags and grabbed the first two images that came up

@mariner4life I got tickets to the athletics on Monday and an option to go to the boxing finals at movie world. hoping it stops raining. last night it was pissing down about 5 minutes before the opening ceremony. Then it held off just long enough for them to get through it.
Just about every one of my kids friends and their families have left town and its surreal going to work in the morning as its just a ghost town. Yes its school holidays but there is no traffic at all.
This is the complete opposite of what the State and local government planned for and Im actually worried for how we will all be affected once its all over. There are still 100s of 1000s of tickets left and they are now having to give tickets away. I am in the building industry and the amount of people who have tried to maximise their renting potential by doing up their properties with the expectation of making squillions during the games is far too many. The lack of international interest has meant a lot of these people are now over extended.

Mate, if the GC can't attract the masses for a CG then we may as well stick a fork in it.

@raznomore I'm only fucked off because the State Government didn't want school kids clogging the the buses up on the last day of the games, so extended the school holidays by a day. All over the state. So my kids in Cairns have another fucking day i need to organise something for, despite being 1,700km north of the bus issue.

I must admit, I am not interested in these games.
I'll only be readying articles of success or failure and think good for them if they win
I thought the last games were held in India, but google tells me that they were in Scotland. The only reason I could remember the India games was because DJ Forbes was rated by Indians as the sexiest athlete at the games, which I found hilarious.

@rancid-schnitzel or basketball (which is for some reason being played in Townsville at the other end of the state.....)
Speaking of hosts.
2002 (UK), 2006 (Australia) 2010 (India) 2014 (UK) 2018 (Australia) 2022 (UK).
How diverse.
Strange that you would start at 2002 and not 1998 when Malaysia hosted the games. Or Canada and then NZ before that. At any rate, thr Games have traditionally been held in a handful of countries so I'm not even sure what the argument is there.

@bovidae Lots and you could easily miss an important move in a race like the triathlon - let alone in shorter contests.
Looking forward to their rugby coverage then!
Keith Quinn can't believe his luck!

@mariner4life I know its only eleven days but the crap we have had to put up with here is not acceptable.
There is now a games lane that runs through the busiest parts of the coast and there is a $250 fine for driving in it and that is in force 24 hours a day. The lane runs through Surfers and Broadbeach. That means the busiest road of the GC is down to one lane. Why 24 hours a day???
Not so much a complaint as it is a sign of the times we live in but I have a temporary bomb checking facility a block over from my house.
