Why does it happen so often, that the Black Caps follow up a brilliant performance with an utter shit one, batting-wise?

    Openers.

With few exceptions we have always had below average openers. Aside from the rare periods with a Richardson or Wright our weakest or inconsistent batsmen have opened. Always susceptible to a couple of quick wickets and things spiral from there.

Especially stints with two solid openers at the same time - Richardson, Wright and Turner were solid, but it takes two.

From Cricinfo: "Think NZ are dead and buried? Wait for the resurrection on the third day... of the test that is."

Still way behind the game, but that's an awesome fightback from BJ and CdG. We need them to bat the rest of the day though.

BJ’s 6th wicket history is incredible
    Part of 2 x 300 partnerships and another 2x 200

Seriously impressed with these two. Hugely significant partnership and have taken us from 36/5 to 161/5.

Having a big hitter down the order is great; it's especially great when they don't feel they need to always be a big hitter. Fingers crossed we have that with de Grandhomme because he seems to offer something with the ball that Boult/Southee/Wagner don't.

Still though any first innings lead for England and they have to be confident. Only thing in our favour is their top order is out of form.

Steady on Colin! Whiffs at one outside off, gets away with it but chastises himself

They're in the tail now. This could easily be over quick

He helped to avoid embarrassment at 36/5. Really good innings, shame he couldn't convert it to a ton.

But this is why I am against batting first - even if we get up to around their score, they're still ahead of the game because we have to bat last when the pitch is hardest to bat on while at the same time being under pressure to win the match.

Ideally batting 2nd you get a decent lead so that they can't set you more than 150, as anything above that can get pretty dicey.

Southee will go into tomorrow on 13 not out.

I'm expecting either of the following posts from Southee haters.....

If he goes early and cheaply he's 'irresponsible'

If he swings and racks up a big score it's a 'fluke'

    I'm expecting a third option:

He bats sensibly sees BJ through to a hundy and NZ through to a first innings lead leading to those who always thought he under achieved with the bat given his performances to say:

    Gee what a mature innings.

You're obviously a hater who doesn't rate his ability with the bat if his options are failure or slogging.

You're missing my point completely booboo. I rate him as a bowler who can bust out a pretty good innings every now and again but who is very unfairly maligned for something that he isn't in the team for.

Southee, or anyone, can approach an innings however they like at 10 or 11. Coming in at 9 or especially 8 I'm a fan of someone at least attempting to work with the top order 🙂

@mn5 @Chris-B futile argument, we did this a couple of years ago remember.

Go back and find the thread and you’ll have your definitive answer (TSF is never wrong) of who gets in.

That would imply it's a democracy, instead of the much more sensible idea that I am right! 🙂

I've made a small adjustment to my selection I think. Rossco now bats at six instead of Martin Donnelly. His sheer weight of runs and hundreds surpasses Donnelly's average.

Yeah - Raval's in a difficult situation in that he's only going to be facing test quality bowlers a handful of times a year. This season anyway. And this year, he's averaged 19 in Plunket Shield cricket.

A bit like Alistair Cook has gone home for a month to sit by his fire and drink cocoa. It's not ideal preparation.

    I get your point.

I think you miss the point that he could be awesome at another discipline he is obliged to perform in some way.

Do you think he doesn't try to field as well as he can? After all he isn't picked for his fielding.

I'm a fanboi. But he can easily be better at batting than he's been. Or should be bat permanently at 11 and be laughed at like Chris Martin?

I truly hope people have higher expectations if him than you ... and he delivers

You really think he's gonna get better at batting at this stage of his career.

Also, who is picked for their fielding?
