I think the selectors have had a mare
They didn't take the series seriously enough if they wanted to stay #1
This is what it comes down to. They've obviously decided they don't care about T20 cricket and will just use it to blood new players. It's really obvious what our top side is, and when we put that on the park we have very few weaknesses.
Is that the right approach? How seriously should we take T20 cricket? Personally I'd like to just see us play our top 11 every game, as watching 2nd stringers struggle against better players isn't much fun from a fans POV.
It annoys me that players are "rested". Why do you have to rest someone from a T20. Even if you play all three games, it is only 12 overs of bowling over six days. Boult is used to bowling 50-60 overs over a five day test match. The players shouldn't need a rest.
It seems this series is being used as a warm up for the tri-series.

If Phillips got dropped for poor technique, what the fuck is Blundell doing there trying to play silly lap shots?
Shouldn’t be blaming him really, as the top order failed to do the job and you can’t expect someone to come in and score at 20 an over.
So disappointing to lose two games in a row so comprehensively.
Sort your shit out!

Ah, the BC's. Guaranteed without fail to lull you into a nice dream, then douse you in icy water. Can't believe they decided to send out all these lame asses for a series decider. Our first XI is strong, but we seriously don't have the depth to be rotating several players, especially newbies. A shame that none of them have acquitted themselves well with the bat. it's a bit scary how when they flop, they REALLY flop.
-
@siam It was a better line-up than the game before.
But, yeah - three problems, poor catching, poor selections, and Kitchen and Kane not able to hit the ball off the square. 25 off 33 just doesn't cut it in T20s, when you only have 120 balls. Left the rest to go at 11 an over and not surprisingly they couldn't do it.
I'm still unsure about our best XI - particularly it's unclear who should be keeping. Presently, we've got Watling, Latham, Blundell and Phillips playing international cricket - plus people like Seifert on the fringes - hard to believe we would have five international class wicket keeper/batsmen (we haven't).
I'm also not sure who should bat at six in T20s, but I'm inclined to solve that problem by playing Ferguson. So....
Munro, Guptill, Williamson, Taylor, de Grandhomme, Santner, wicketkeeper (someone who can hit), Southee, Sodhi, Boult, Ferguson.
de Grandhomme to shift ahead of Taylor if Rossco isn't batting by over 10.
-
@Chris-B yup agree with that lineup, it picks itself really. Just wicket keeper the unknown.
-
Rossco needs to be a floater or a hitter depending on the situation. Same with Kane to an extent.
The problem with Kane at 1,2 or 3 is momentum. I'd prefer him used if we lose 2 wickets early on, to consolidate. One of Kane or Rossco becomes the nurdler depending on situation.
We need to have two cracks at an early explosive partnership, so Guppy, Munro and CDG unless the first two get away, then just bring in a support player rather than a slogger.Edit: what I'm getting at is flexibility. I don't think we use it enough, especially when playing our two top batsmen that have full skill sets

No-one covers themselves in glory and the guys with the IPL chequebooks aren't impressed either.
Boult, Southee and Santner pick up contracts, but Tim and Mitch are at bargain basement prices.
Tim gets $156K - less than for example Australian quicks Ben Dwarshius, Jason Berendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
Santner gets $78K.
Trent gets $343K.
So - just seven NZers picked up out of 24 who applied.
Nobody getting hugely rich overnight.
Dan Vettori bought BMac, Timmy and CdGh.
Flem bought Santner.

Wow, did we make a mess of that, from selection to performance. Terrible fielding / catching, the attitude with the batting was all wrong from the start.
Even the umpiring was shit. That we had to use a review for a clear caught behind was a shocker (yes that is what reviews are for for but that was so obvious), I believe that if the ball touches the ground then it is not "on the full" and therefor not out, but the precedent was set long ago. The no ball call on Ish was shit too. Having to bowl a free hit after it beggars belief.
Flush that whole match.

Ferguson dropped, KItchen still there (WTF?), and Blundell is the wicketkeeper.
Black Caps Twenty20 squad for Australia:
Kane Williamson (captain), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Tom Bruce, Ross Taylor, Anaru Kitchen, Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Seth Rance, Ben Wheeler, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi.

What am I missing with Kitchen? The guy has a batting average in domestic T20 of 20.01 and four half tons. So at that level he score one every 25 bats ( he's obviously a specialist batsman )
Also he's 33.
Can someone please tell me what the fuck he's doing in the Black Caps?
