Can't for the life of me understand why Sodhi isn't playing the ODIs, if not tests as well. He's a class act these days.
In regards to tests, they want an all rounder at 6. Neesham/Anderson haven't come off so Santner bats there. Santner is a better batsman than Sodhi. I think Sodhi will be seen more in the future but didn't do a great job with taking his opportunities at the start of his career.
Amazing that Sodhi hasn't played IPL so far.
I'd prefer someone who has actually scored at least a 50 in the shorter forms of the game to be referred to as an 'all rounder' but that's just me.
Fair enough. NZ put out a test team in the 80s with test centuries down to number 10, so being able to bat and bowl (or keep, where applicable) to a reasonable level isn't a recent requirement.
Still very much a bowler who can bat pretty well sometimes in my view.

I'm hoping for Phillips to open in the Munro role and Taylor to bat 4.Phillips has been dropped as well and Blundell brought in as a keeper. What role is he likely to fill in the batting order? I don't think he opens for Wellington so does this suggest Kane promoted to open again?
-
Pretty harsh on Phillips. Pick him, play him out of position, and then drop him. I know he didn't look great last night, but if all you do is open then you'll prefer the ball coming onto the bat with the field up.
-
I haven't seen any of the other T20 games so I don't know what Phillips' previous form was like. But the timing of his axing, with only one game to go, can only be seen as a desperate move.

It's certainly a change in mentality from the selectors if you think about how much rope Santner, Nicholls, Craig and Sodhi have/were given.

@cyclops I don't remember those others looking as ineffective as Phillips has looked. His technique has looked shithouse this series. I suspect if it was a case of scoring no runs but having a sound technique the selectors would have persevered.
-
I know Munro has been great there but i think Williamson should be opening in T20's. He is our best batsman and good at finding the gaps. i want him batting during the powerplay. I would probably have Guptill at 3, Taylor at 4. De Grandhomme is too explosive and too much in form to bat any lower than five. Then I would have a hitter at six. I think our best T20 team is:
- Williamson
- Munro
- Guptill
- Taylor
- De Grandhomme
- Phillips
- Santner
- Sodhi
- Southee
- Ferguson
- Boult
It should be enough batting depth for a T20, five good bowlers plus a few more options and a good balance in regards to the batting.

Sound technique in T20 is a bit harsh..
-
@hydro11 I wouldn't mess with Guptill. He knows what his job is opening and it's working, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. At best you get a marginal gain letting Kane open - better at hitting gaps, but less power - at worst you render Guppy ineffective.
Agree about de Grandhomme, though. Give him a bit of time to get his eye in rather than having to slog from ball one.
I'd bat Southee ahead of Ish and Boult ahead of Ferguson as well. If there's only half a dozen balls left at the end, I'd be a bit inclined to elevate these guys higher - both seem to be pretty effective at going hard from ball one.

Great day for NZ cricket!
Good result for world cricket. It's not good for the game when one team is too dominant.
haha
We're good, but not that good ...

Is Phillips still the best option as the T20 keeper? If he isn't comfortable batting in the middle order then you are asking him to fulfill a role that has just got him dropped. Blundell might be a better option, as the other big hitting wk (Seifert) also prefers to open.
I'd also like to see Devcich back in the mix. Sure, he might not be able to open with Munro and Guptill there but he is a much better batsmen than Santner and could also fill the role as the left arm spinner.

No way. Spinners are pretty much the most important players in a T20 XI.
I want 2 good ones in an 11 (in a normal sized cricket field). No way I'd sub in a part time darter like Devcich for a specialist who brings both economy and wicket taking in the middle overs. -

My impressions too. Unless he improves his technique I don't think he will make it at the International level.

IPL auction going on right now (I'm watching on Cricinfo). So far:
Kane sold for US$468K
McCullum for US$562K
Guptill passed in.Also, notably passed in were Joe Root, Hashim Amla and Chris Gayle.
Big money paid for Ben Stokes, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc - plus a couple of Indians.
