Yep. They're not quite 'craft beer' as we know it today but they still do some absolutely brilliant brews.

An All Black and founder of NZs best mainstream brewery. That's pretty much living the dream right there. Will raise a few Hop Rockers in his memory this weekend. RIP.
Raise a few of the Stoke range too. Macs was brought out years ago by Lion but once the restraint of trade finished the family rebooted the old brewery under the Stoke brand.
The big difference Macs brought to NZ was re-introducing batch brewing after a long period of domination by the big two and their continuous fermentation process churning out blandness.
It was seeing how a batch brewing business could be successful that led others down that path (eg Emersons) and stretched the palate boundaries a bit in the market. The lessons those outfits learned were passed on to the new wave of smaller brewers we know today. -

I've moved again, so am now learning that Canada actually does some really beer. No, not Labatt Blue, Molson Canadian or any of that mass produced stuff.
Similar to New Zealand there are a lot of smaller breweries in Vancouver, Victoria and the surrounds that produce really tasty batch brews (aka 'craft beer'). None of them really export outside the local area though.
On the downside, 'imported' beer is harder to find. I haven't seen ANY beer from Australia or New Zealand in the bootle stores here, not even the large ones that are usually exported. Apparently it's just too much hassle, also with the import duty slapped on top. There is the odd UK and European brew in the import section though.

Amazing how unbelievably satisfying a good old fashioned Corona is with lemon. I've bribed him with some to mow the lawns tonight !!!

Just drinking an IPA from Manaia Craft Brewers...
Only come in 1.125L bottles and this fecker is a beaut at 7.1%!

How many have you tried -- any recommendations?
Craft breweries are the new wineries - everyone is dropping out of the rat race to open one. Distribution is still the huge challenge.

@nzzp only had the IPA, but have a Dry IPA that I'll probably crack open tomorrow...not sure I can handle another 1.125L of beer today haha #lightweight
I had the wife swing by the markets today to pick me up some as I hadnt had any of thiers.

Fermentation volume is a big issue too. I've heard that contract brewers are charging $1 per litre, and wanting payment up front. That can be $100k ...

A lot of those early craft breweries have sold to either Lion or DB. Emersons and Tuatara are two others.
I'm down in the lower SI for a month so will be trying as many of the local craft beers as possible. Invercargill Brewery has always had some decent beers (e.g. Smokin' Bishop, Pitch Black) so I'm keen to sample some of their summer seasonals.

@bovidae yeah are a fair few about, I guess for some it is more a hobby and making a bit of cash on the side, but some get to the point the big boys make them an offer they cant refuse.
Was reading an article recently in AirNZ Kia Ora magazine about the Parrot Dog guys and thier crowdfunding to get more $$$ for larger operation.
In the same magazine was about Cassels & Sons in Christchurch too, they are based in a boutique mall at 'The Tannery' which has restaurants and shops as well as lots of beer!
8 Wired & Sawmill are probably 2 of the more established from Warkworth/Matakana, more recently McLeods in Waipu and now Manaia at Whangarei Heads, with the latter at present only selling at local markets.
Will be cracking open my Dry IPA from Manaia, also picked up a dozen Harringtons Yankdak APA for $19.99 from New World a couple of weeks back as well as MOA Dry Hopped PIlsner doz for the same, both very good for that price!
JUst picked up a doz Mac 3 Wolves IPA for $22 and singles of Bach Breweing Witsunday IPA and Good George Blackberry Cider to try.

Yeah I should probably rephrase that slighly, they've done some goodies but Panhead and GP are better overall.
