I wouldn't mind Michael Venus to win Sportsman of the Year. He's had awesome results this year. Winning the mixed double final of the French Open and reaching the mixed double final of the US Open (can't remember whether he won that one).
I agree but I think Tom Walsh should win it.
-
@Virgil the All Whites had a hard fought draw in the first leg of the qualifier so should be odds on to win it again.
-
The winners should be winners, not just triers.
In the Emerging talent little Nico Porteous is a bit of a freak and is likely to be representing NZ in the Winter Olympics at age 16.
Youngest freeskier to execute a Triple Cork 1440 and already signed on to Red Bull (at 14!)
He is part of the next wave of freeskiers that grew up following the Wells brothers around the mountain. -
Incredible balls on that kid!
I agree that NZ as a sporting country is big enough and strong enough in many disciplines for it's supreme awards to only go to winners, and not triers.
In other news, I see that Ronaldo picked up his fifth Ballon D'or last night. Its insane that him and Messi have won 5 each of the last 10. Surely these 2 deserve to be ranked with Pele & Maradona has the greatest players the game has seen. I haven't really seen enough of Messi play to have that much of an opinion, but I have seen a bit of Ronaldo and he's an absolute freak.

Some were quite predictable, others not so much, but IMO the awards went to the right winners.
Yep, can't really argue with any of those. all deserved.
IMO though (and it is a 'fans award'), although I loved the Woodman try, the one that made me really cheer and get excited by the sheer audacity and skill was Tony Pulu's finish off the DMac, Lowe, Messam interchanges. That was one to watch over and over. -
@crucial That was a great try, but the problem with team tries like that one is that the player who scored it would get the award, while most of the work before scoring was done by others. So, in that way, I think the award went to the right player.

Interesting seeing comments out this morning how the Black Ferns are not a curtain raiser, they are the main event...
Question is, would they regularly sell Eden Park out if they were the main event?

Good thing they don't award these things based on reputation...
He hasn't been nearly as bad as some people here would claim, but no way did he deserve that. I thought Ioane was a lock.
Um, no he's a winger...

Short answer: no. Long answer: not a chance.

Congratulations Beauden Barrett on being named NZ Rugby player of the year!
What do you mean "he wasn't"? But he was World Rugby player of the year, surely that makes him automatically NZ rugby player of the year too?
Oh, I see. Well you can't have it all, but at least he was nominated!
What do you mean "he wasn't"? You're telling me the World Rugby player of the year couldn't even make the nomination for NZ rugby player of the year?
But what is up with World Rugby? They usually get these things right - I mean Jerome Kaino in 2011 for example.
What do you mean "he didn't"?
Oh I see. Well who did get NZ Rugby player of the year then? Let me guess - Rieko Ioane!
Not him either?!
(congratulations to Sam Whitelock :p)

@bones and by a different panel.
and does that WR panel even look at how players perform in club competitions (SR, domestic comp.)?
