@mn5 That top 6 would be competitive with anything we've had. I'd lean towards the six from the mid-80s - Wright, Edgar, Reid, Crowe, Coney, Crowe, but the only other time we'd have had something comparable would have been some of the combos that included the likes of Rigor, Fleming, Astle , Styris - and it's possible those four never played together.

JJ Crowe and Edgar were pretty ordinary test players overall. Surely Jones is a better fit?

@chris-b so why have they decided now is a good time to get Southee to change his approach? He's batted that way for years!

The incessant whinging on the Fern is finally paying dividends!

If only he could be an all rounder like Doug Bracewell.

@mn5 Jones didn't play in that era, though.

Edgar was a lot more valuable than his average suggests. Chopper was the weak link.

Yeah I suppose he was especially for that era. Not many David Warners around. Wright and Edgar are probably still the best pair we've had.

@mn5 I'd be interested to see the average number of balls Edgar faced per innings. He had a lot of lowish scores where he batted quite a long time.

Yeah he did a great job in terms of occupying the crease as I recall. Jeff Thomson sledged him and said he'd never die of a stroke.

Statistically speaking were Wright and Trevor Franklin our best opening combo at the time?

Franklin made Edgar look like Shahid Afridi

Meanwhile Little Kane clumsily lets a yorker bowl him! A hundred was there for the taking Kane!

Still need a couple of hundred runs to completely shut the door on the Windies.

What about his awesome reaction. It was like he had just been told he has to sit through a days worth of My Little Pony episodes

That is niggly but they're still so far in the box seat it's not funny. Some good stuff required from one of these two now.

Cummins is firing down some decent short deliveries. There is still enough in the pitch to interest the bowlers.
