Whiny Warren Gatland

Articles in NZ media from a google search of "Bryn Gatland Lions". I stopped after 5 pages.
It's all feel-good human interest stories on the quirk of father v son. That's why I'm wondering if I missed something.

The scrutiny on 22-year-old Bryn Gatland before this match against his dad's British and Irish Lions team was relentless, and so, as it turned out, was the young man's performance in Whangarei. It was one of bravery, skill and inventiveness, and Gatland the younger emerged from the 13-7 defeat with his reputation very much enhanced.
That Bryn Gatland has a smart head on such young shoulders. Here he is about to play the game of his rugby life against one of the finest teams on the planet for a cobbled together Baabaas outfit and his only concern is that his go-to guy for advice at moments like this is now off limits. That's because, of course, Gatland is about to make a neat little slice of rugby history when he runs out against a British and Irish Lions team in Whangarei next Saturday night coached by his father, Warren.
Bryn Gatland isn’t torn. Far from it. He supports the Lions and wants the British and Irish side to do well on their 10-game tour to New Zealand and that includes beating the All Blacks in the three-test series. What’s odd about this is that Gatland is a Kiwi. Huntly born and Hamilton bred he dreams, like all New Zealand rugby players, of being an All Black. He’ll start at first five for the Provincial Barbarians team in the opening match of the tour in Whangarei on Saturday, and is an outside chance to feature for the Blues against the Lions at Eden Park four days later (if there are more injuries). But Gatland, as the surname suggests, is the son of Lions coach and former All Blacks hooker Warren Gatland. And, in this case, blood is thicker than black. “I’m an All Blacks supporter normally but family comes first so I want the Lions to do well,” Bryn Gatland politely explains. When asked what constitutes “do well”, he turns the question around. “What would you want if it was your father (coaching the Lions)? “It’s not that I want the All Blacks to lose, it’s that I want Dad to do well. It will be amazing if the Lions can do well against the best side in the world. It will be a very proud moment for my family if Dad can achieve that goal.”
At the Lions' first open training today, Warren Gatland implied the clash would not cause any awkwardness within the family. "I spoke to him last night and he seems to be enjoying the week. I think we'll catch up tomorrow. "We haven't spoken too much about the game, but he's pretty excited to play against us and I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes," Gatland said.

Warburton said he had known Gatland for several years. He could remember when he came in as a youngster and did some kicking with the Welsh squad six or seven years ago. "The Welsh lads know Bryn very well. I have a lot of respect for Bryn. I saw him play last year as well. "I thought he showed a lot of courage when he stepped up and kicked a dropped goal last year as well to win [when North Harbour beat Otago to win the Mitre 10 Championship final]. You've got to give him a lot of credit for that. "He's obviously in a good bloodline as well. I'm looking forward to coming up against him and shaking hands after the game.```

I think Gatland got upset about one article that said something like "the Lions would target him as a weak spot, as he was a young, inexperienced 1st 5 facing international players." There wasn't much in it.
EDIT: This is the bit he objected too:
"I can give you an example - the day before the first game against the Barbarians the headline in the New Zealand Herald was 'Gatland to target Barbarians' weakness - his son'. I thought it was a disgusting sort of headline. [I was] gutted by that."
**Gatland v Gatland: Warren aiming at Bryn in Lions opener** Lions coach Warren Gatland says his son Bryn probably expects to make a few tackles against his side in tomorrow's tour opener. Gatland senior is going to instruct New Zealand-born second five-eighths Ben Te'o to angle back and target Bryn at No10 - an unusual state of affairs for a proud father to be masterminding a game plan affecting his son. But the aim is to try a strategy that will potentially neutralise the All Blacks' kingpin Beauden Barrett in the test series. "I spoke to him last night and he seems to be enjoying the week," Gatland said of Bryn. "We will catch up tomorrow. He probably expects to make a few tackles on the weekend but we haven't spoken too much about the game."
Gatland is a big sook.

Another moan:
"The last couple of weeks in terms of the criticism and personal attacks has been tough to take. Not so much for myself because that's part of sport but for family members," Gatland said.

@canefan fuck that! It's a no win job.
We win 99.9% of the games we play, and still the coaches get a whack from the public if we don't look like the personification of perfect rugby played by aggressive angels.
Lose? Hatchet jobs. Just win? Not god enough what are the coaches/selectors doing. Win by a shit load? Well, we just expect that.
I would take a high paying job where every success is celebrated, and winning more than you lose is brilliant.
Depends if he realistically wants to win a WC. If so, ABs it is.
What a difference 8 years makes

That "quote" that Gatland "quoted" never was. Read Paul Lewis's article.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11935476
``Gatland wasn't immune from flexible remembrances. He recalled the New Zealand Herald headline that disgusted him as "Gatland aims at Barbarians' weakness - his son". A search through Herald digital archives yielded no such headline.
"Gatland v Gatland - Bryn first piece in test jigsaw" was the Herald piece run on the day complained of - and it must be said media all round the world fastened on the unmissable angle of (player) son opposing (coach) father.``

@booboo interestingly the ferald and stuff have a habit of having a headline over the thumbnail of an article but you click into it and the headline is different, often the thumbnail headline is sensationalist, maybe that was it as I think after it is gone from the main page the actual headline only shows.

A couple of weeks back they had “ Lorde made me a believer “ and if you clicked on the link the other headline was “ I fought the Lorde and the Lorde won” . I didn’t click on the link my son did to wind me up over my deepseated loathing of both Lorde and puns .
Well he thought it was funny anyway. The hostile press meme probably has its roots in 2005 when they called Woodward, Campbell and BOD on their bullshit and smears which is their job and they were right to do so. Gatland actually looks like he might have some sort of personality disorder , quite bizarre behaviour really.

Why is he reading the paper anyway?
That's the part I never understood
He probably isn't, chances are one of his hangers on said some like "those fluffybunnies in the paper called your son the weak link in the team" and because he lives a stage of near permanent outrage over the mildest of slights or under appreciation of his coaching genius he would have gone nuts .
-
Worst part about him reacting like that , he is letting everyone know , you can get under his skin ,
And people take note of that , see it as a weakness , for perhaps another time
-
Could the Herald pukes make their contempt for these ABs any more obvious right now?
-
@salacious-crumb Yep, they've gone a bit loopy in the last few days.

Let’s not forget this pearl of wisdom of when we win by a lot that it’s “not good for the game”.
One of the more laughable things I’ve ever read.

It’s a typo obviously, when the abs reenact the love scene from deliverance on them “ it’s not good for their game”.
