Considering that the cost of a rocket lab launch is about 5% the cost of the average launch with everyone else (IIRC) we could be on the verge of a boom. When the IPO comes beam me up!!

hmm, just checked their website, and no jobs that I could apply for. Looking for something as I finished my last contract (so @NTA can speak to me again), so might just send them my CV anyway...

Have a 2 degrees of separation link to these guys. My ex-workmate's partner is a rocket engineer for them - saw her posting about his work and laughing that they launched at 4.20 🙂 He's a mad skilled dude, made a hovercraft out of a vaccum engine, a surfboard and some rubber! 3-4mm of patchy lift counts aye?!!

They've just moved to the US as the company is setting up a branch of the business over there. Pretty cool to see things going so well for them. It'll be amazing for the region and NZ.

There are a couple of other companies looking to compete in the same space so good that RL has the early lead.

Don't hold yr breath waiting for an IPO. It's technically a NZ/US company but almost all the venture capital is out of California.

their website is called rocketlab usa

"Rocket Lab is a private company, with major investors including Khosla Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Data Collective, Promus Ventures, Lockheed Martin and K1W1".

So apart from a bit of govt seed money and some from Stephen Tindall its effectively USA - USA - USA.

Shame we won't be able to invest in our own space program anytime soon. Did I read that NASA invested too? Their very low projected per-launch costs must be a concern for competitors

@canefan they'll just get forced to put prices up....

reminds me of that movie War Dogs when they put in a bid to supply weapons and they were just ridiculously cheaper than everyone else....

That's so fucking rad. You'd think, with endless acres of waste AND a facility called "Woomera" we would have a space program. We've had nukes detonated out there FFS!

The launch scrubbed in December is potentially minutes away from being cleared to go today

A boat entered the restricted area and delayed the launch apparently.

This also amused me - "a launching pad, which has sea views".
Sounds like a real estate ad. "Rocket launch site for sale . Suitable for launching space vehicles or fishing, you choose. Price by negotiation".

1720 for launch apparently. Too busy in space to go before then (for real - collision risks).

@snowy the boat turned up 5 minutes from launch. Now weather has turned and the launch is postponed again. What an arsehole!

@nzzp FARK, almost shat myself when I opened the feed and saw that spiral contrail. All I could think of was oh shit it's a Challenger situation. Just watched stage 1 separation in real time. Fuck that is cool

I love the rocket name, "Still testing", not like the US Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger. Very Kiwi
