Instead of bowling or trying to bowl six yorkers at the end, I really have no idea what Kane and Southee were trying to do. A major fuck up.

He was trying to bowl slower balls which are quite effective. Boult bowled some nice yorkers but he also got hit for six and Southee doesn't have Boult's control.

Nineteen NZ players up for IPL auction on 20 Feb. According to my rough conversions of base price...

    ~NZ$300K
    Boult

    ~NZ$200K
    Anderson
    Elliott

    ~NZ$100K
    Guptill
    Taylor
    Henry
    Munro
    Neesham
    Santner
    Ferguson

    ~NZ$60K
    Sodhi
    Broom
    Bruce
    Devcich
    de Grandhomme
    Ryder
    Wheeler
    N. McCullum

    ~NZ$20K
    Phillips

I think there's only 29 international player spots available across the franchises and 319 players on the block (though quite a few Indians) so most of our guys are likely to miss out. ESPN articles are talking up the chances of Anderson, Munro, de Grandhomme and Boult. Lots of teams looking for all rounders apparently.

Philips will be cursing the weather, which might deprive him a chance to play a blinding innings.

Boult goes for way over his reserve - slightly over a million NZ$. Corey Anderson and Matt Henry go for their reserve prices. No-one buys Guppy, Rossco, Sodhi or Phillips.

I'm never sure about all the variables in play, but an Afghani spinner goes for $800K and no-one bids on Imran Tahir with a NZ$100K reserve?

Flem pulls out the chequebook for his Christchurch mate Ben Stokes - pays more than NZ$3 million for him. And Danny V. gets in on the act, paying the highest ever price for a bowler - $2.5 million for some English bloke called Tymal Mills - who probably won't want to be Kyle Mills in disguise.

Lots of other NZers in the second phase of the sale and then a repercharge for those who missed out.

He played for Auckland in the T20 comp.

    And...
Martin Guptill to Kings XI Punjab for his base price of $104,000 at the second chance auction after he was unsold first time around.

Yeah - nice to see Guppy get picked up.

Saw mention there's still five international player slots not filled, so a chance someone else from NZ could get picked up.

Can't say I paid any attention to Tymal Mills previously - apparently very fast and was being talked up before the auction, but his stats to date aren't much to write home about. Danny Vettori presumably paying a lot more attention than me.

Quite a few interesting players in the "not picked up" list - including a few high profile Indians.

    Well pooh. Got it close.

Gotta love the blackcaps: we're shit; hey we're in it; fuck we're going to win; we're shit: fuck we're going to win; hey we're in it; fuck we're going to win; we're shit; ok we didn't do so bad ...

We would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for that meddling AB and his guiding and coaching of the other bloke.

AB the best one day batter ever? quite possibly

good game though and some nice pluck at times from our boys.

i still remember the old days when one of BooBoo's "we're shit" thoughts actually transpired with no hope after a bout a third of the game gone

Nice to see the hairy javelin still at it, knows how to win a game doesn't he

NZ cricketer gets the job done with one meaty blow, reminiscent of his Cricket World Cup heroics.

Looks like Flem also snapped up Lockie Ferguson as a cheapie fast bowler.

Presumably Lockie will look at his Auckland team mate's salary with a bit of WTF happened here. 🙂

Judging by these stats, so might e.g. Hamish Bennett.

I watched him get carted all over Bay Oval in the local T20 competition in December. He bowls a LOT of variations.... not effective though.

I am stunned he got a contract, let alone a big one.

Fast bowlers are needed because that is obviously what India are lacking. You can see this by the fact the world best T20 bowler, Tahir, wasn't even picked up. Also a lot of fast bowlers seem to skip the IPL. Mills and Boult both benefited from Starc dropping out. Hazlewood and Steyn aren't playing either.

He's been injured a lot, but when fit he is very fast, swings it & bowls good yorkers. He just had an "audition" in the UK tour of India & bowled really well so can clearly do it in Indian conditions. So its not that hard to see why he got picked up, harder to see how the bidding got that high but fast death bowlers are not exactly easy to find. Especially not ones who have literally just showcased their ability.

Fine and hot day forecast in christchurch for what should be a pretty high scoring game.

Be interesting to see if Fergusson gets a go and if so then who drops out, hopefully not Sohdi. Maybe Neesham?

Toss not too far away so we will find out soon.

Bloody warm and humid today, should suit the swing bowlers.

Heading down to the ground shortly, hope it's a good crowd.

If Brownlie continues to go well then he should definitely move ahead of Latham, if Latham doesn't keep.

Doull is suggesting that Blundell could be looked at to bat at 6 and keep in place of Neesham. Brownlie to open with Guptill. Neesham needs to bowl well to justify his position as an all-rounder.

I expect Hesson will be conservative and retain Latham.
