2016-2017 World Sevens Series

NZ 7s has pumped out countless Super Rugby quality backs over the last 20 years - not one player in the current squad fit that bill.
I understand the landscape has changed and more younger players are being brought into Super Rugby but there are still plenty of talent not being used - surely talent could have been identified at last years U19 nationals - and this doesnt even include the players at the 7s nationals that performed well and got overlooked (e.g. Visinia, Emerson etc).

This post-Olympic year should be used to test several new players and player combinations. I hope the coaches will pick a different group for the Sydney 7s, the core group (including the likes of Curry, Forbes, Mikkelson and Stowers) and some other newbies (Ruru, Emerson etc) and also Guildford (who again captained an invitational team to winning the Darwin 7s last weekend). I'd like to see Luke Masirewa back in there as well.

@trainmuch Shouldn't compare XVs with 7s. It's a different code that requires a different type of fitness and skills set. 7s players don't have to be at Super Rugby level; they have to be at the best level of 7s, and you're right, the NZ men have slipped down the slope. I don't think it's because we don't have the players, but because we don't have the right coach and the right selection of players. I hope the new coach, Laidlaw, is going to be able to correct that.

That second turnover that Joubert gave Fiji a penalty for was pretty important and fucking harsh. He also should have penalised when Curry was trying to take the quick throw in. That is supposed to be a yellow in sevens for slowing the game down.
Having said that we weren't even close with all of the dropped ball and simple mistakes. 6 Handling errors in 14 minutes is bloody terrible - basically one a minute if we had 50% possession.
I can see why the Welly 7's is dying / dead. I did 15 years at the HK sevens as it was a catch up with mates piss up. They even serve jugs with spirits. Sevens rugby is always a lottery and an error by a player or ref will change a game but you could always have a beer and a laugh if your team lose out. I never saw any real trouble.
No beer / light beer - well...might as well catch up with mates at home or pub. The alcohol intake of certain individuals / dickheads just has to be monitored.

plenty of people moaning on social media about the atmosphere and lack of people at the 7s...
Think the Wellington CC, Westpac Stadium and NZR do need to look at things and how they can breathe life into this event again.
People inevitably comparing it to the 9s which IMO is not a fair comparison, 1 that is in what, its 3rd year, being in Auckland is more accessible to a larger number of people, we dont get a huge amount of top class league in NZ compared to rugby.
Best thing that can happen for the Sevens is for it to move. Wellington have fucked it up well and truly and the fun police have a complete monopoly of it now. Personally as I'm a bit older and less into binge drinking all day I don't really care too much but pissheads in their early to mid 20s don't know what they're missing out on.
NZ deciding to start sucking at Sevens is only a minor part of the problem in my opinion cos even when they've done poorly in the past it's very easy to latch on to another team ( Kenya were always a favourite followed closely by any team who wasn't England or Australia )

@Stargazer funny how the top team they picked last year for the Olympics were mostly a super rugby and all black mix. And the missing guys from last year are mostly playing sure rugby this year eg Reiko and Akira etc. Pace, power and athletism are universal across all codes and versions.

Please, remind me, which medal did they win in Rio? Gold? Silver? Bronze?

In better news for NZ they smashed England to make the plate final - rookie playmaker Koroi carving up - he is one positive from this tournament for NZ.
That's only there to make the special needs teams feel good for turning up

Honestly, we have been pretty good in this tournament. Just the Fiji game was disappointing. If we finish Argentina off here, it's a decent performance (although we would still want to do better than 5th).

What's with Scooters Billy Idol sneer - did they push one of his plugs too far down and he had a stroke?
Bell's Palsy apparently.
