Colin Cooper for the Chiefs. That would be a retrograde step IMO.
Que? Has something been mentioned? I would think that KK is lined up.

Disappointed to read this news. I have nothing against Cooper, as he's a good coach, but I don't like the idea of recycling coaches at Super level.
My choice would be Keane but if Cooper is announced as the new Chiefs' coach this week there will be a complete clean-out of the coaching staff. His choice of assistants will be just as important.

Bloody hell. What was the point of bringing Keane in? Cooper as an assistant sounds good.

Guess this could go in this thread...?
Wants a bit of time to build some bridges

As much as id love to see NMS at the Blues he is with the Canes - its the way the story is written.
I think the reason for the 10s is because they want it to sort of double as a semi Super Rugby preseason - you can get a better cross section of players that way - e.g. Tongan Bear Loni Uhila is playing the 10s - he wouldnt play the 7s.
Not sure how much more use Uhila would be though, seems to me you'd still have to be super fit to play however many games in a day.
As for the Colin Cooper news, that's disappointing. I wanted to see Keane take over and Cooper be one of his assistants.

@taniwharugby An interesting detail from the Herald's article on that rumour:
His son Bryn, who was educated in London when Gatland snr coached at Wasps from 2001, is a promising fly half who could well line up for Auckland Blues against the Lions after impressing for North Harbour this season.

We already knew Read was getting (wrist) surgery, because Robertson had already mentioned it before the November internationals and that Read would miss the beginning of the SR season. What's new is the more specific time frame, April, which is quite a bit later than I thought it would be.
It will be interesting to see who'll play at 8 until April. Will they shift Taufua to 8, and name one of the less experienced players at 6; or will they select one of those less experienced players at 8? Jed Brown is more a 7, isn't he? So either Pete Samu or Bedwell-Curtis at 8 if one of them gets a start?
-
Whitelock has been named captain for the entire campaign.
-
@taniwharugby Yeah, it's very similar to the last few years of McCaw's All Blacks captaincy, when Read took over that role at the Crusaders.
-
It's busy at the NZR negotiation table:

@Unco
Why would Coops want to be Keane's assistant ? He walloped him just a couple of years ago in NPCOn the other hand, he got his ass handed to him in a hat this year by Keane's assistant and Mark "The Hammer" Hammett!

On point. But Keane is not Rennie and Coops isn't Smith hahaMaybe but Cooper had 8 seasons at the Canes and came away with nothing. I think he has something to offer, which is why I'd have him as an assistant but I'd rather the spot go to an upcoming coach than going back to the well.
Same thing goes with Deans if he ever comes back to NZ and Fozzie if he ever leaves the ABs setup.
