Wow ... I am planning a south island drive with the family shortly and have been keeping an eye on the roads there to see what's opened/closed. The road north of Kaikoura is still closed and I've been looking to see when it's going to open but found nothing.
HOWEVER, looking at google maps / earth, I see the photo's here have now updated to be taken after the quake. It's worth taking a look, as the sheer number of slips in the area, and the overhead shots of the road, are something to behold.
There are about 3 instances where the road was cliff on one side, ocean on the other, where the whole cliff has come down across the road. It is going to be a mammoth mammoth job to clean up.
Check it out - it's well worth a look.

Good grief, that was ages ago. What are they doing? Don't tell me "fixing Christchurch", that still looks like Dresden.
-
@antipodean To be fair, I don't know the dates on those photos - it could have been a week after the quake.
They look really bad from above, but then if you zoom down to a street view, you can see just exactly how high the cliffs are. It is undoubtedly a huge huge nightmare/mess to try and fix up and I'm not surprised it isn't going to re open for quite some time yet.

I was joking about State Highway 1. That will be a mammoth undertaking. Downtown Christchurch on the other hand, Fukushima will be habitable before that's fixed.
