I do apologise whole-heartedly for bringing up a Ratpoo article.
If you break it down to the basics though - he did bring up the interesting point.Maybe Read was just so good, that he won't get quite back to that, kind of like DC in 2015.
Maybe hes also been underplaying his hand, and focusing in different areas, because to be honest we've kicked ass during the TRC, so he doesn't need to be flash harry. -

It really is taking a long time to sink to the press and public that by the end of year tour most of our players that have had a heavy workload are playing on the reserve tank. As Hansen explained again the other day, since Argentina were introduced we travel around the world three times and play something like 8 tests in 9 weeks through multiple time zones. Even for an elite athlete you are pushing it to expect them to be at their peak through all of that.

It was also the same time that they increased th number of super rugby games and we do 7 tests in 9 weeks. 8 of them away from home (3rd aus match was at Eden park).
Barrett will play 31 games this season. That is a massive workload.
Even the English only allow their test players to play 25 (I think it is)

Is that really true? The English would have played 13 (I think) tests this season. Their domestic season is 22 games plus 2 rounds for the playoffs and then at least 6 European Cup games on top. If you play every test and only 25 all up then you play less than half of your domestic team's games.

There were time during the RC and the Wales test where Read was every bit the player we have come to appreciate and countries laud over. I seem to remember him topping a few post game polls here too.
He's obviously jaded IMO. Not passed it, jaded. Like Sean Fitzpatrick and AJ Whetton.
But if Read was to go Id go Cane. He has established himself ahead of Ardie as our starting option and has a level head. Coles I thought has the potential too but I like that hes a little loose and a bit of a mongrel.

Read will be fine, we have these discussions at the end of every year. If anything, it just goes to show (yet again) how large the motor on McCaw was. Everybody talks aobut it - Henry, Hansen, even Wayne Barnes. You just can't expect Read to have that same impact.
I'm all for Sam Cane too. The only mark there is that the captain has to play 80 minutes, where as I think our best team has Ardie on for Cane with 20-30 to go.
So given that, then it's probably best to give it to the accountant.
