This is pretty awesome, especially if you like blue-eyed soul vocals.
The scene in The House of the Devil that used this classic was pretty awesome, unlike it's daggy music video. Dude can rock a double breasted suit though.
I've been listening to a lot of Drag City artists recently - Silver Jews, Bonnie Prince Billy and Bill Callahan
I've been a big DC fan for a very long time. The first gig I ever signed & promoted was a Smog (Callahan) show, and we all made emoney.
Might as well throw in some kiwi stuff. I was listening to the Verlaines for the first time in ages yesterday.. they really should have even more recognition in NZ.
Love the Verlaines. Downes contacted me about a decade ago, told me he was flying NZ to Europe, and doing a quick stopover in NYC and Boston to do a pair of solo acoustic gigs. Could I make one? He pretty much knew I might be one of the only guys in Canada who would. Years earlier I saw a Verlaines show in Toronto with only a handful of people, and it rates as one of the best concerts I have ever seen. So, yes Graeme, thanks for the invite, we're there! Me and a pal drove white-knuckles 14 hours through a hurricane to Boston to see him. But the hurricane meant his flight was cancelled, and so was the show. Fate intervened. The first person we met, taking shelter from the rain standing by himself, was the imposing figure of Thurston Moore. We shared horror stories about our respective drives into the flooded city. He told us to come check out his solo show at a church instead, and he let us hang out with him, which pretty much made my head explode. I reckon Da Grubster might also be a fan, he's a big Flying Nun disciple.
I was lucky enough to see Pavement in 3 different cities this year
Haven't seen them in a decade, but caught them 4 or 5 times in the mid-90s, interviewed them and photographed them a couple times. Always a fan.

What I've been listening to, right now, today:
Django Reinhard & Stephane Grappelli, Hot Club of France 1935
The new Grinderman (Nick Cave) b-side featuring Robert Fripp (??!! awesome!!) - playing in two nights here, and I'm trying to decide whether I really need to see Cave for the twentieth time, or go see Neubauten next month, as well as Killing Joke (too many concerts!)...
Snowflake Midnight by Mercury Rev from a few years ago, 'cos I can't get enough of it
Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky - a single-cam concert I shot of a Gira concert, last year was used to finance this album, and I shot video for the third show of their new tour a couple weeks ago, this album is the concert tour, and I'm hoping Gira/Young God Records releases it as a DVD next year. The edit & production is out of my hands, but I remember the concert was exceptional and the video I shot being friggin' gold. And really, I'm getting too old for this.

Edit: And the Missus made me listen to Mumford & Sons. She read a newspaper article, where it mentioned Mark E. Smith threw a bottle at them at Glastonbury and called them "retarded Irish folk singers." So we wanted to know what they sounded like. I listened to a pair of songs, and decided it's not my thing.

And this:

'Cos I do not like Ayn Rand, and yet find myself rocking out to her regardless. Can't get enough of this vid...

Jamerson is my fave bassist ever, he did so much more than play an instrument, he changed popular music.

I don't know how to quantify "greatest" when comparing musicians. I love Green, but can I honestly say that he is "greater" than any of Marvin, Smokey, Isaac, Otis, Curtis...? No, I cannot. Love 'em all.

Btw, Green is back touring...

I love all of them Red, but for me AG is the best.

Likewise, there is only one Queen - the Queen of soul - and Aretha is her name.

I saw AG at the Albert Hall - we shook hands. I was moved.

My preference is the High Priestess of Soul: Nina Simone. But that's all it is - my preference.

I love the classic line that John Peel delivered on Top of the Pops when Aretha did her duet with George Michael:

"You know, Aretha Franklin can make any old rubbish sound good, and I think she just has."
