Justin Marshall - Petition

Oh and another thing.
In an age when sky for example during the Welsh series have after game analysis at the ground by 3 ex-ABs in the commentary team then cut back to studio for a round table discussion by 4 more NZers. Not bothering to get a travelling Welsh media pundit in,
At least Marshall seems the most knowledgable of them of any overseas rugby players and coaches from his time in Eng and Wales club rugby. All though this relevance will quickly fade as the years pass.

Marshall is by far the best 'comments man' out there.
Find the 'hate' bizarre.
Occasionally gets rules wrong, occasionally too un-biased. Ooooh string him up.
Positives:
Doesn't whine.
Isn't biased.
Isn't a fapping fanboy.
Good heads up analysis of what's visible in-ground but not apparent to the viewer.
Provides more credible analysis that psychic energy, etc
Gets names right.
Doesn't call opposition cheats.
Doesn't moan constantly about refs.
Hasn't called a ref a 'disgrace'.
Has been a positive less-moany influence on his main commentator (both Nisbo and TJ) on both the laws in general and particular in-game decisions.I reckon we're lucky to have currently a decent Comms team who aren't a complete embarrassment on international feeds.
I like him, and remember the pre-marshy days with absolute disdain.

He is a fapping fanboy. I thought he was going to spontaneously combust when 'Go Beauden' scored in the final....

Actually that BB try in the RWC final is a good example of what he brings to the Comms team. While BB was still about 15m behind the action after the Smith kick Marshall immediately alerted the viewer that BB was the man to look out for.
Great piece of commentary.

Just swap Marshall and Wilson around
Put Marshall on the sidelines to talk about conditions, subs etc
Wilson is the better analyst so put him next to Nisbett.
Although Meg probably has a "can't get hair wet" clause in his Sky contract....

I think Justin has improved a lot. He used to try too hard to be impartial and ended up erring to far on the other side.
Now he calls what he sees, is ok with being enthusiastic about the ABs, gets more right than he gets wrong.
Yeah agree with that, he still has some dumb moments, but then who doesn't!
-
Marshall "breaking character" for Barrett's try in the final was outstanding I thought. You don't want it every game, but you don't want him underplaying a moment like that either.
For those slagging Nisbo - gee I reckon you are rating him harshly. There are none better out there IMO. Sumo doesn't bring the big game feel and can be too jingoistic, TJ I quite like but general consensus is against him (he also until recently was a poor talisman for the ABs). Greg Clark and Gordon Bray are abysmal. The RSA contingent don't do much for me - although their Xhosa and Afrikaans commentary teams make more sense than Joel Stransky. The whingers from the North? No thanks.
As for commentating tries by Beauden Barrett - enjoyed the understated call of his second try last night even though he was 30 meters out. "That's it, see ya".
-
Yeah in the context of a RWC final and how that play happened, i.e. OZ hot on attack, ABs defending and then boom turnover and the pace of Barrett, I liked the commentary there.
Just for you MN5

Think he has another moment when Nonu scored off SBW's off-load...shame he didn't use the Nonu, Nonu, Nonu boom line, cos it so woulda worked!

"He's got Dagg"
That was the Smit 100th test where the ABs spoiled the party with that last minute try

I loathe Marshall as a comentator, he's awful. Both him & Nisbo seems staggeringly uninformed for guys who's job it is to watch rugby. Not just the laws, but a huge amount of what is happening in NZ rugby
A few weeks back there was an AB warm up where Dagg took over kicking, it was discussed at length on here & the conclusion was the selectors were looking for the extra range Dagg had.
Then a week later in a test Dagg hits one from way out & Nisbo & Marshall discussed it for 5 minutes saying "did you know he could kick? has he ever kicked before? wow". Clearly neither one had even bothered watching the game of 3 halves a week earlier. They are both awful.
But we had this discussion re Mexted too. Who was worse.
Being in the UK I got to listen to Stansky, he was actually pretty good. But I only have to hear him once or twice a year.

It's fair enough for guys like me to be out of touch and uninformed and constantly miss games ( sorry ABs that's two in a row ) but I'm just talking shit on a forum with others, some of whom know more, others less.
You're right, if it's your job you should be lapping up every single game available and know every stat about every single player, Ken "second man play" Laban is particularly good at this. Cricket shits all over rugby in this particular facet although being a slower game there is more scope to talk a whole lot of shit to be fair.
-
I actually love listening to the northern hemisphere commentators, especially when the ABs are turning it on, because you can almost feel the gritted teeth and blind envy. It's even better when Clive the Fluffybunny has to weasel word his way around the post match. But the sweetest taste is when the Irish commentators who trot out the usual poaching and BOD tropes are left in obvious jawdropping awe - that is worth putting up with the snide remarks about calculated professional fouls and the only slightly masked references to brown folk from the islands
-
As a kiwi living overseas I love nisbett. It's that warm feeling of home with the familiar dulcet tones.

Sky do often offer that. You have to go to settings during the game and switch to alternate language or something like that. You just get the refs mic
Look it up on sky site. The alternative commentary for the Durban test was the SA comms but I often just listen to the refs mic for certain NZ Super/NPC games depending on who the commentator is (looking at you TJ!).
For anyone that wants to do that on MySky HDi just push the SELECT button and then the language option (Yellow button) and choose which commentary you want. You need to remember to change it back again though.
