discussion about all of his best films
bro, an almost unmatched set of credits. ranking them is almost impossible.
Commando
Predator
Conan the Barbarian
True Lies
T2
T1
Red Heat
Raw Deal
fuck, Total Recall!
The Running ManTwins and Junior and Kindergarten Cop...
No two rankings are going to be the same
IMO Predator is the best. Vastly better cast than Commando, a worthy adversary and a script that transcends typical 80s action movies. The atmosphere of the jungle, a hidden villain build tension. Matched with immeasurably better cinematography and production values.
Commando is cartoon like in comparison. Huge body count, relentless but predictable action, stereotypical villains, Bennett looks like he is cosplaying as a mercenary. No complication in plot twists or character development getting in the way of endorphin rush.
That said, I doubt Arnie would've had the career he did without Commando. It's the quintessential 80s non-stop over-the-top action movie which effectively portrays Arnie as a slightly more realistic Reagan era superhero. And of course the more quotable lines.

I get what you’re saying, Predator is ‘better’ for the reasons you mention but you pretty much can’t compare them. Both action movies but completely different types. Even though it has an invisible Alien from space it is far less silly than Commando.
Both brilliant, I loved Predator 2 as well, Danny Glover is a great action hero in his own right. Subsequent Predator movies were a mixed bag to put it mildly

T2 would also be in my pantheon of Arnie's best films. Terminator was great, but I think the sequel was a better film
Yeah I think Terminator 2 and Aliens had the same formula.
Both were follow ups to absolute classics, turned the action/sfx up several notches while lowering the tension ( both directed by James Cameron as well it must be said ) and created arguably even better films ( emphasis on arguably, all four are absolutely outstanding followed up by some hugely inconsistent efforts, their third instalments were both huge let downs in particular ! ).
The recent Alien movies are far better than the Terminator ones in my opinion though

Oh yeah, Aliens is so much more fun to watch. It knows exactly what it wants to be and executes beautifully

You're not wrong but the first is a masterpiece as well.
Just the one Alien but considerably harder to kill when the crew don't all have state of the art firepower like the marines. Both have absolutely awesome characters, I loved Parker, Dallas and Ash from the first, Hudson, Hicks, Vasquez and Bishop from the second. Ripley is awesome in both too.
Different types of movie though.

Keeping with the Arnie theme…….
( is this his most underrated film ? Fucken love it……)
I wonder if this will more closely align with the book than the Arnie movie? (Not watching the trailer as I don't do that as a rule, so this question might be answered within the trailer).

Reality TV is much more of a thing than it was when Arnie starred in his classic flick. Will be very interesting to see which way they go with it.
I really didn't like the Total Recall remake at all so I hope they do better with this.

The Brutalist: Finally finished watching this, maybe took me four sittings, so less than a Zac Snyder movie.
Even if Brody's mugging is set to one side this movie is bollocks. I was quite liking the architecture stuff early on, but this was at times TV movie drama mixed with art movie that at times seems like it's trying to be Soderbergh (upbeat music over setting up shots etc) but everything just took so fucking long. It's a 2 hour move that runs over 3 hours when it doesn't need to and still misses so much of the story that the narrative is at times hard to follow.
To make matters worse it's not even based on a true story.
One more movie to watch on the Oscar noms list but will be hard to dislodge this from 10th.

Shit dude. That is a very farking low bar!

Furiosa. If I have a "criticism" of this film it's that there was too much action! Psycho film with some great characters and performances. If they'd packaged and marketed this film better it could have been the block buster it deserved to be. Stoopid.

I liked Prometheus and Alien Covenant ( fully aware many didn't though ! ). The Terminator films got convoluted with all the time travel jumps and Arnie getting old and making cheesy jokes didn’t fit the series
To this date I STILL haven't bothered finishing the very latest one

Watched two movies with gimmicks in the last 24 hours.
Nickel Boys: This is filmed POV and I thought I'd hate it. But, the story won me over, and they switched the POV as it went on to the point I didn't really notice it. Is about a young black kid in 60s US who winds up in a juvenile delinquent school. Is on Amazon if anyone wants to watch it.
The Alto Knights: Robert De Niro plays two characters, not twins, not brothers, in this based on fact Mob movie. Movie was fine, and he was decent, but they really didn't need to have him play both characters. It's about Frank Costello and Vito Genovese.

Ok, here's my Oscar rankings from best to this movie is utter shit and probably still would have been without the shitty ham actor in the lead.
- I’m Still Here
- Anora
- A Complete Unknown
- Nickel Boys
- Conclave
- Dune Part 2
- Emilia Perez
- The Substance
- Wicked
- The Brutalist
I think I discussed all of these in the thread. TBF, 7-9 could all be 7th equal. Actually Emilia Perez and Wicked could be decent films if they weren't musicals. The Substance was disappointing.
Genuinely surprised by Anora and Nickel Boys as I wasn't interested in them before seeing them.

I'm a regular dune reader, and enjoyed part 1. But part was pretty lame, sadly.

Yeah, I thought Dune Part 2 would be much higher but it was pretty disappointing. The editing was a bit fucked which annoyed me.
