@MiketheSnow Incredible! She could probably take on the 800m record at this rate.

Peter Snell? Man was obviously superhuman to set a record that stood for 62 years, especially when you consider some of the super stars of middle distance who have come since. Walker in particular.

Also shows that Kiwi middle distance running has been average for some time

@booboo 800m as a distance is a repugnant race. Can't pace yourself, can't sprint. It's a distance that destroys you. Breaking the NZ record at over 27.5 km/h doesn't get Preston in the top 150 for the distance - astonishing when you think of it.

Been plenty of Olympic medallists in that time. Walker in particular, Willis, Quax, Dixon.
Yeah most of those guys were 50 years ago, but still ...

In related news Yared Nuguse breaks the indoor mile record with a time of 3:46.....
Tbh I did not realize that World Athletics recognize indoor records as distinct from outdoor (of they are slower than the outdoor record) but it's cool all the same.

Going back to Sam Ruthe - I I'm just looked at the times for the Commonwealth games in 2022 - his time would have got him out of the heats and into the final so I guess he could conceivably be in Glasgow next year.
I know that the Commonwealth games seems to dying a slow death but I really hope that if it is culled back that it can be held once every four years as an athletics only event and if it's permanently hosted in the UK, so be it.
IMHO it just gives athletes from the Commonwealth one more shot at glory than they would otherwise have. Also, it gives them a chance to gain some championship experience that stands them in good stead for the Olympics/world championship.
