Black Caps vs England Series

How is Bethell batting at 3? He doesn't even seem to have a FC hundred yet? Can any English shed some light?
Like Michael Vaughan ( better test record than FC record ) he has the game for test cricket according to Joe Root
I woulda thought they’d put Root at first drop though

Famous last words, but this England team just looks a bit shit. Always possible Root and Brook score a million and Atkinson bowls a great spell, but their batting and bowling just looks limited.
After the last two series ( one still going admittedly) both involving India I find it safer not to make any predictions

I’m actually OK with the batting, though it is a bit feast or famine. The bowling however is another matter. No mercurial individual talents, not much experience and not much variation in the pace options. Getting 20 wickets might be a problem.

I wouldn't worry, our guys usually find a way to get themselves out. How many runs they have scored beforehand varies dramatically, which is a vast improvement on most previous generations of Black caps at least. In this group there are usually a couple who stand up.
In other words, getting 20 wickets is unlikely to be the problem, but amassing more runs before we do the same to you might be. We have now played 18 tests at home without a draw is what I am getting at.
I'm really looking forward to this series, so sadly we are likely doomed to fail as well. It's the Black Caps way.

Whatever happens I won’t be surprised in the slightest. I’ve never known test cricket to be as unpredictable as it is now
I am hoping the BCs channel whatever energy they had in India and pound a frankly, quite ordinary looking England team into the dust
I see they have Stokes batting seven, is he even going to bowl ?
They also appear to have a part time keeper. Sounds like the selectors haven’t read the post from @No-Quarter

Nathan Smith to make his debut.
@Canes4life called it. That's the exact team.
Roll on test cricket at home against a team that isn't Sri Lanka or Bangladesh !
( both of whom who have beaten us of late.....)

@Catogrande Christchurch is about as England outside of England as it gets

There are two Chris Woakes. The one that plays at home and then the other one.
We have the other one.
The other one sux

Sux?
Actually his overall record is very good. We’ll see how he goes tomorrow. At least he is an all rounder who all rounds unlike the kiwi one
-
Yeah he does (in England) contribute all round but his primary job is bowling and I don't feel that without Broad and Anderson, we can carry him if he continues with his overseas form. No matter what he adds with the bat.
Cue, match winning innings from Woakes.
if only.

England won the toss and will....bowl
-
No surprises there, the surprise for me will be if we successfully navigate first session without too much loss
-
Bowling first is always a bit of a risk, if they don't run through our top order in the first hour we are suddenly on top. Just need to survive, comon lads!
-
Stokes: "The wicket generally gets better and better here as cricket is played on it. There's a nice covering a grass on it so hopefully, we can get something out of it with the new ball.
Edit:
Latham: "We were going to bowl, but if you bat well in the first session, things can get a little bit easier -
Oh shit this isn't on Sky, it's free to air! That's awesome, so many more people and kids will be able to watch
