I think the talk of the demise of Australian cricket is way of the mark.
There is enough in SS to bring through and there is some outstanding young talent
coming through the U/19 and U/17 programs like
Steve Hogan rated very highly in QLd as a batsmen
Oliver Peake from victoria another batsmen
    Tom Campbell from Qld bstsmen
Addison Sherrif Nsw pace bowling allrounder
    Simon Budge from WA batsmen

I don't think the public criticism in Australia is a surprise, it's been coming. We've played relatively poorly in every home series going back to the last Ashes in 2021. Dropped games we should have won.

People know that it's been a long time between drinks for our top order. The fact that there doesn't seem to be a logical next man up is the only thing saving Marnus. Uzzie hasn't scored a hundred in forever and retirement will be knocking on the door if he can't turn that around.

If we lose the second test it will be really interesting to see what can be done, not for this series but for the Ashes next year. I can't see them dropping all of Marnus, Ussie and Smith but there will be a case for it.

So Smith on 17* at the moment has plenty to prove. Get 40-odd and he keeps the wolves from the door for at least the next few weeks. But he goes before that and the drums will start to beat...

The production line from the late 90s right up until the 2010s seemed endless. One sensational player would replace another with minimal disruption, particularly in the batting department.

I think that's true but it didn't go as late as you suggest. We've been devoid of new batting talent for a considerable while. Marnus has been good but he's not an all time great. Travis Head could get there but it's taken him a while to get there. Likewise Marsh.

We're a long way from where we were with the Shield where you had guys like Brad Hodge, Michael Bevan, Stuart Law averaging 50, 60-odd and not getting a gig.

Now anyone feels like they are two or three hundreds away from a call-up.

.... Aaaand he knicks off to Siraj for 17. Never looked comfortable.

Does he ever when he first arrives at the crease?

I don’t think the drums will beat that loud given Australian cricket and the commentariat fluffers to back the old boys club. Been going on for years and Smith will be able to say when he’s had enough.

I think for Smith that's true. But Marnus is an interesting case. Always a bit weird, both on and off the field. Alpha ex-player types have never warmed to him, so I'm unsure he will get the benefit of the doubt in the same way Smith and Khawaja will.

Marnus aye I coached him at Qld u/17 and U/19 level always has been different.
One habit we had to get out of him he would commentate every ball he faced.
It did piss the bowlers off no end,
They just used to try and knock his head off sometimes that worked in Manus favour.

Haha that's great. What a weirdo.

In cricket as in all things, we will tolerate weirdness if you are successful. But if that turns then not having the 'good bloke' factor on your side can hasten your demise.

Also doing dumb things like reviewing when he's plumb last night don't help your cause.

Head was an important wicket in innings 1

He was looking good and has a history of carving up India (white ball cricket etc).

He might have pushed Aus close to India's total if he hadn't gotten a beauty from Rana

Didn't Boof Lehmann have something like 10,000 FC runs before getting a test gig?

I’m hoping India roll the next 4 wickets tonight and then I’m sure we will hear the standard 4 day tests debate that gets aired every year when the Aussies beat would be touring sides in 4 days

4 day tests in Aus usually don't end in Australia being humiliated. Well done India.

Hard disagree. I think he was actually underrated.

In Australia he was a punchline who was never truly appreciated. An opener who could generally get past the new ball and average 40 odd? We yearn for that.

Now all he’s remembered for is reviewing the odd plumb LB. Not his supreme eye and ability to shore up our batting lineup in a relatively unstable period.

And then you have his bowling ability, which again was underrated. Despite injury limitations he was the perfect fifth option who could tie down an end while the quicks had a rest.

And then in the shorter forms he was a master.

I’m not saying he’s an all time great but in Australia I don’t think he has the respect he deserves.
