Wally was probably emerging player of the year but he doesn’t fulfil the 5/6 hybrid space.
Imagine our pack with RD at 7, PSDT at 6 and Wally at 8! -

Biggest missing piece is a grey-hair in the coaching set-up. Now Schmidt has been lost, Vern Cotter springs to mind.

The biggest missing piece in the AB's in recent years has been a stubborn insistence to select certain "favourite" players regardless of their form, and not give players that are in good form a shot.
Predictable selections lead to predictable game plans which lead to predictable losses.
Thank goodnes we got in a new, innovative coach to fix this.

im still concerned that the coaches are being instructed to select players (like BB) who NZR have resigned on long contracts
our selections and games plans just dont have great connection
you either need to decide how you want to play and selected the players to do it, meaning you might not select the "best" playing in a position...if they work with the players around them better
or you need to select all the best players then be creative enough to come up with gameplans that let those players shine
we seem to select our players....and select a game plan...independent of each other

I think it's poor use of the bench and not selecting a 10 who runs straight.
Our forwards replacements were 5 to 10 minutes too late against France and even worse against South Africa.
A first five who runs the ball straight would be a major dynamic changer. The options were Perofeta and Plummer. They are more direct than either Barrett or Mckenzie.
The current 'out the back door' attack pattern also encourages the first five to run diagonal/sideways. We often see a laboured attack and handling errors with this pattern. This was a problem for the Crusaders this year too who relied heavily on the 'out the back door' pattern. In contrast Cotters Blues minimised this attack pattern. The Chiefs also used this spareringly
I have my doubts that this game plan will win games against big strong defending teams like France and SA.
Against France I thought we had the best execution of the game plan this year. We ended up dominating possession but we rarely had France out of their comfort zone defensively and they were able to contain breakouts relatively safely.
Our lineout is accurate but we don't seem to have the ability to launch a strong attacking maul from it. I believe the small lock and loose forward combos have weakened our attacking maul as an attack variation. In the final minutes of the French test SB didn't have the confidence to kick for the corner and launch a strong attacking maul.
None of Cane, Sititi, Lakai, or Savea are strong maulers. Even Finau isn't particularly strong in this area compared to the likes of Sotutu or Ioane but at least he has the raw ingredients. It would be handy having a bigger lock starting regularly too like Tuipulotu, Darry or Holland

And what's concerning is that Razor is pinning his hopes on an ageing one who will come home after playing in a soft league for the last few years, and who was more known for his turn of pace than his ability to manage games
