    @Stargazer

Maddock left the Canterbury job after the Mitre 10 Cup, where his side lost to Wellington in the semifinals this year, to work as an assistant under former Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder at Japanese club Toshiba Brave Lupus.

Seems fitting given their similar results with those squads.

I am Happy to buy him a one way ticket to Japan and drive him to the airport to make sure he gets on the plane.

I recall a couple of Christchurch based TSFers were very negative about Thorne's coaching ability

Leo Crowley appointed by Wellington Rugby to the role of Director of Rugby - Wellington Lions Head Coach

Wellington Rugby this morning announced that 2019 Assistant Coach Leo Crowley has accepted the role of Director of Rugby and begins his new role on 1st February 2020.

Crowley’s role will include overseeing all Wellington Rugby academy and player development programs as well as being the head coach the Wellington Lions for the Mitre 10 Cup competition.

Crowley, a former coach with Ta$man and Taranaki is naturally excited with securing the role and says he is looking forward to working with the players, clubs and the wider management group in the seasons ahead.

Wellington Rugby are working with Crowley to put the planning in place for the coming season including the appointment of his management team for the Wellington Lions campaign.

Crowley replaces Chris Gibbes who has been appointed as the Forwards coach for the Hurricanes Super Rugby franchise for the coming seasons and has been Gibbes' assistant throughout the successful 2019 campaign which saw the Wellington Lions runners-up in the Mitre 10 Cup competition.

    .

I'm not really sure what the point of these games is, considering Ta$man will have to take a B team to the USA, as all, or almost all, of their first-stringers will be with their SR franchise. The upside is that those US teams now have a chance of beating them. Whether we'll be able to watch these game in NZ is still a question.

@Stargazer Someone might stream the games, but I don't think it will be a high standard of rugby - I don't recognize any of the names in the Houston squad - though some are evidently imports - some South African and British sounding names - maybe of Currie Cup standard.

    Leguizamon is playing for Seattle.

Most interesting thing in the article below is that Canterbury and the Crusaders are apparently part-owners of Seattle.

Yeah, they have been for almost two years.

The Hurricanes have a deal with the Toronto Arrows (then called the Ontario Arrows).

Hurricanes form partnership with Canadian club

Don't know whether the other NZ franchises have similar deals.

@Nogusta I should have been clearer, I meant similar deals with MLR teams. But yes, several NZ teams (or their academies), including Mitre 10 Cup teams, have some form of partnership with a Japanese team.

I remember that not only the Blues, but also the Chiefs (Kobelco Steelers) and Highlanders (Docomo Red Hurricanes) had development options for some players from those Japanese clubs, resulting in those players playing for the development team in 2019. Hawke's Bay (and no doubt more provinces) does the same. There have been movements in the opposite direction, too. IIRC that's how first Gareth Evans, and now Lincoln McClutchie, ended up with the Docomo Red Hurricanes.
