@Stargazer Pretty sure that has changed from previous years - where it was Premiership teams in reverse order of seeding and Championship teams in order of seeding - hence any Championship team that held the Shield usually ended up with two relatively weak challengers from the Premiership. (Though Otago chose Canterbury - possibly due to the exchange of brown envelopes
). -
They appear to be a bit different to 2017 - where the first round was selected by Premiership teams in reverse order.
Doesn't matter much this year, because the Shield is with Canterbury.

Crossover Selections for 2020 Mitre 10 Cup
******The first steps in shaping the draw for the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup are underway with the 14 Provincial Unions making their selections for crossover matches between the Premiership and Championship divisions this week.
Counties Manukau and Bay of Plenty will officially swap places, with the latter promoted into the 2020 Premiership while Counties Manukau will compete for the Championship next season. Each team plays all teams in their division along with four crossover matches against teams in the opposite division.
New Zealand Rugby Chief Rugby Officer Nigel Cass said while the 2019 season only finished a few weeks ago, provincial unions are already turning their focus to 2020.
“Once again we saw some great rugby in the Mitre 10 Cup, and these crossover matches are always an interesting feature.
“We saw a number of championship teams pushing, and beating, premiership teams in 2019, so the selections that Union’s make form an integral part of their upcoming season.
“The Unions have been asked to provide feedback on the season and we will look to see if improvements can be made as we look towards next year’s competition,” said Cass.
Representatives from all 14 teams met this week for the annual crossover selection picks. CEOs and team management take part in the selection process, with each team picking one home and one away fixture, their two other crossover matches are selected by the opposition.
The four rounds of picks took place as follows (home team listed first, and teams making selection in bold):

@Number-10 So no Premiership team wanted to play the Magpies and as a result, the third round pick ends up in the Steamers getting the Battle of the Bays at home.

Waikato and Taranaki like to play each other as a traditional fixture and for the Ryan Wheeler Memorial Trophy.

@Stargazer We should be disappointed that we did not pick Bay Of Plenty in the second round when we had the second pick. Obviously the Treasurer of the HBRFU does not rate them when he puts his prospective gate take revenue figures at the forefront of deliberations. Still the opportunity to stuff them on their home turf next season is most appetizing!

Yep, in the first round, Canterbury had the 5th pick, with only the Magpies, Otago and Counties remaining. Canterbury picked Otago in the third round.

@Stargazer I understand but the 3rd round seems to have a lot of derbies. Canty probably threw Otago a bone for a RS challenge.

Nepia does make a valid point that at least there is a battle of the Bays. Why we chose to play you though is beyond me, its asking for trouble!
