Those sports stars you just can't warm to

This was pre-twitter and they didn't mind so much being told no - more the way he did it. I wouldn't have mentioned it other than the story about his 21st.
-

Here's my Aussie perspective, so take this with however many grains of salt you want, but...

I've never warmed to McCaw. He doesn't strike me as the kind of bloke who I'd like to have a beer with. Very straight laced, very driven. I can understand the issues with him that some on here have, though I don't 'hate' him by any stretch.

FYI it's not really to do with his Kiwi-ness, as I'd gladly have a beer and a chat with Nonu, Smith x 3, Dagg, Read. But not the Franks brothers, can't stand muscle-bound gym-bunnies.
-

Interesting. I wonder how much of it's got to do with not liking your own kind.

I would argue that perhaps the Aussie sportsman most respected by NZ folk over the last 20 years would be Steve Waugh. And I can't help but think that those same reasons you say you've never warmed to McCaw, are exactly the same reasons why most of us warmed to Waugh.
-

I reckon an avo beer with the Waughs would be fucken fascinating entertainment. As I said before try as I might not to admit it but there's plenty of Aussies I'd add to the "have a beer" list, Mortlock, Sailor, Larkham, Latham, Hayden, Justin Langer, Border and many others.
-

That was Marc Ellis at his best ( I had a beer with him at Matterhorn years ago, nice fella although as a 7th former he did chuck my mate, 3rd form at the time, in a rubbish bin which we laughed about years later, Ellis paid for the beer as a way of saying sorry which I told my mate about.... ). Class comedy.

As far as I know Ridge hasn't broken any woman's back so is further up the cocksucker chain than Veich who as a sports "personality" probably doesn't qualify for this list. I think I remember Ridge having a real go at TV when all the revelations came out about that, saying he would never work with him again so kudos to Ridge for that at least.

I remember hearing rumours that Ellis used to put 3rd formers into rubbish bins and push them down the terraces. Was glad I didn't go to school with him! His parents were my nextdoor neighbours, his old man was a grumpy old bugger. -

They weren't rumours. I'm sure you remember those bins, if you go in arse first you basically get stuck and someone has to help you out.

Filo Tiatia amongst others used to join the "fun" too. I was too small and runty to bother with but some of my smart arse bigger mates got dealt to.

They did away with heaps of that "third form hunt" shit before you started as far as I know, looking back it's real macho bullshit, one of my mates to this day would walk up and punch Ellis in the face if he ever saw him.
-

I had a mate who flatted with him in Dunedin. Said he was a right prick to flat with, would come home after being out on the lash, eat all the food and trash the place. But he always seemed to get away with it as he had the whole lovable rogue schtick down pat
-

Doesn't surprise me, I used to work with the guy who coached him in the first 15. He tried to ruin every team photo putting on dick nose or something similarly stupid , whenever I see someone described as a prankster I read that word as "attention seeking arseclown" or abbreviate it to "Ellis".
-

Dunno why it is billed as a movie (and as a cinema release??) is more an extended documentary by the looks...be interesting to see if it gives any more insight into him than we got from his book.

judging by half the comments in here, they missed the boat on the release date by about a year ;)
-
When I have seen aussies bagging McCaw online its almost a mirror image of when I see kiwis bagging Cameron smith , very similar scenario
