Yes - there were a few athletes across the sports who met qualifying standards but got rejected for the outside top 16 criteria. The whole 'try their best' thing is a cop out at this level. Our swimmers weren't even getting close to their own personal bests, (apart from Corey Main) let alone final times. And a few carrying injuries and withdrawing from some races to focus on others then still doing crappy was disappointing too.

Man I hope the Fijians win gold. That would be epic.

Thrilled of course for Murray and Bond, just fucking legends, but what I really love about the Olympics is the stories like Natalie Rooney and Luuka Jones, not even rated at home to medal, and they cane it at the highest level.

Here's hoping the cyclists add to the haul.

(On a side note, quite surprising how bad some of the other NZ rowing crews have done. 5th and 6th in B finals are not the results you want to read.)

The swimming team have really been the epic failures. Not even a finalist amongst them. I think Corey Main swam a few PB's, which is something, but the senior members of the team were rubbish.

Boyle clearly wasn't 100% and the rest of them probably did close to their best.

For anyone wondering if we beat the record, the Rio website says we beat the Olympics record (not the World record though):

I don't think you can blame the lane as the German quad sculls won gold from lane 1. They just didn't row well enough.

Well done to Luuka Jones - that was a pleasant surprise to hear this morning.

Sure but what Chris said is still perhaps true. Great Britain beat us in qualifying and then we broke the OR in the heats. We probably didn't go all out in qualifying though.

There was a strong headwind on the course so the times were always going to be slow.

The closest Bond and Murray have come to losing in this streak was at the WC at Karapiro in 2010 when they just edged the GB pair. I was there that day and ended up standing next to Murray's wife as we both looked at the big screen to see who had won.

At Olympics and WCs the times aren't so important - winning is.

I think they started purposefully slow because the water near the start was bad and didn't want to capsize.

Sevens boys come fifth - but, still some fucking idiotic play. Akira Ioane showboating instead of getting close to the posts (we missed the kick), Kaka passing the ball to give Mikkelson the try instead of running around under the posts (we missed the kick). Argies come back but we win.

That sort of stupidity is dumbfounding to me.
