The more I think about this I'm convinced Clarke did it on purpose in the PI player gets in trouble with the law and then is guaranteed selection in the AB policy.
After all he did try the constantly injured all the time and still first name on the team sheet for a while but that policy is reserved for white guys from the south.

He should do a Shannon Frizzel and go overseas on top of a brush with the law. That makes them even more indispensable
