Euro 2024

England look a bit lost again. Foden has been better. The English attack looks devoid of ideas. A Slovenia goal would make this very interesting
Probably doesn't help that they left arguably their two most creative players in Maddison (albeit out of form) and Grealish at home
-
Southgate's managerial nous is summed up by swapping TAA for Gallagher. Move Foden to the middle of the park and play either Gordon or Palmer wide left. He's far too conservative.
Gallagher is such an ordinary player. Mainoo looked a bit better. Palmer too. This is the worst group. All teams poor.
-
Looks pretty unlikely they'll go any further than the next game
“Sometimes football matches are compared to games of chess,” notes Chris Fryer. “This is usually because they are tactically intricate and cerebral, not because only one piece moves at a time.”
LOL

Palmer has made a significant difference. But pretty poor performance for England against a less skilled team. The Slovenians celebrating like they won the game
Slovenia have qualified for the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time! Their players are dancing with joy on the field, and quite right too.

Didn't mean it in a bad, way, they just held a big country to a draw. But that explains it better

So the two pre-tournament favourites both finish with the same results, albeit France although unconvincing faced much better opposition.
Spain and Portugal look the best so far.
England could still go deep as they have managed to scrape into a half of the draw that could open up for them. They could also be embarrassed in the round of 16 and go home having scored only two goals.
Good tournament thus far. Shockingly drab Group.
edit - Doh GD of 1 Scored 2

Slovenia knew that a draw would likely see them qualify so that is what they played for. Still uncertainties on the rankings of the 3rd place teams but a good chance England play Netherlands then winner of Italy v Switzerland which isn't frightening.
Right now the other bracket of 4 on that side of the draw looks like the place to be. Lots could change tomorrow but at the moment one of Romania, Slovenia, Austria and Turkey will be in the semis!
-
I think I'm right in saying that Southgate as a manager has always been cautious, but could England's lethargic play be a ploy just to ensure they get into the next stage?

How so? If they had lost the game, would they have ended up on the harder side of the draw? I assume they would be on the same side of the draw as they are now if they had won?

@canefan I mean he's playing not to lose rather than win.
Very English. The players look bored

One thing I've noticed is that the extended overtime of the EPL means wasting time is back on the menu - I've seen games with extended stoppages and it is still only +4 or +5 at the end. I'm sure it will get worse in the knockouts.
Also a lot of teams in the Euros seem to be "dull and a bit shit" but make it difficult for the other team to break them down. Rare exceptions like Austria are keeping the tournament alive.
