Surely with late arrivals from IPL you still schedule pre-tournament fixtures for the remaining players who haven’t just been playing IPL.

Aussie played warmup games without their IPL players and the coaching staff fielded to make up the numbers

    India played a warm-up game.

The Jaapies had a three match tour of the Windies in May.

England played a series vs Pakistan in England at the end of May.

We were the dipshits who decided we didn't need proper preparation and reaped the rewards. I thought we were supposed to have taken "learnings" from getting our arses handed to us at the WACA when we didn't bother to play warm up games prior to that big tour.

Just saw Hesson making this point on a chat show - and also throwing in that "everyone knows that practice wickets in the Windies are substandard, so it's no use planning to do your work over there".

Just in case anyone apart from Stead was hoping for a 0.00000000001 chance of us mathematically going through, AFG beat PNG easily as expected

So any batsman apart from my boy Glenn Phillips remotely enhance their reputations ?

Really disappointing that proven performers like KW, Conway and Mitch couldn’t scrape 50 BETWEEN THEM in two games. You’d expect one of them to score big at least once.

Other hit or miss top order batsmen definitely missed.

Some of the bowlers played ok and kept the totals well within reach if the batsmen did their jobs.

Geez these next two games will be a colossal waste of time but might paper over some cracks I suppose.

Is it fair to say, we're the equivalent of Australia in rugby and we've just gone to a World Cup and been knocked out by Wales and Fiji?

    What happens next, Eddie?

Actually, I doubt that it's Stead's job to line up warm up games, so he's probably been dudded more than anyone.

Surely Stead would have heavy influence of whether or not warm up games would be played.

He doesn't just rock up and get an itinerary and go 'yeah sweet'.

If he wanted warm up games we would have warm up games.

Sounds like he asked for late warm up games to be played after the IPL players arrived and the organisers refused.

About the performance in general, I'd say time to take it as a wake-up call and send through the broom. We've had quite a bit of turnover anyway and it's not a guarantee the other cattle available is automatically going to succeed better, but this performance was bad enough that we couldn't really do worse. Also probably time for Stead to move on.

    No.

The equivalent of a sevens team ie not too many people really care that much. They’ll get on the bandwagon sure, but no one is exactly devastated at the result

I'd find it pretty hard to believe that any coach wouldn't want warm-up games - I'm inclined to think it's the guys who hold the purse strings who decided we wouldn't have them.

To continue the rugby analogy, if I were Razor I'd be desperately keen to have a warm-up game prior to England, but I doubt he's had much say in the scheduling. I'm guessing he's rocked up and got the itinerary and gone 'fuck me - England!'.

I'm not sure the analogy fits. Previous AB regimes have had games of 3 halves with Provincial teams as warm ups.

@KiwiMurph It might fit insofar as financial considerations have overridden maximising team peformance.

Super rugby finishes and then this is when England is available to come. The guys responsible for balancing the books aren't going to say no - they're going to tell Razor to deal with it. Something similar may well have happened to Stead.

(Maybe we will see one of those games of three halves in the free weekend? Though that belongs in a separate thread. There's some Crusaders who will need some sort of hit out).
