It's somewhat inevitable - there's no money in media any more.
-
If I've watched the 6 pm news, it has only been TV3 since its inception. All the oldies don't realise there is more than one channel on TV.
Oh well, I won't bother at all in the future. FTA TV is pretty much dead anyway, and TVNZ has said they are moving to digital within a few years.
-
daily news shows were the one thing i still kind of liked on free to air, you knew you could drop in at 6pm or in the morning to get a quick run down on anything big going down. for a while the socials were ok for big news but even that now gets lost down the feed of adds clickbait

An excerpt from the newshub article:
If confirmed, the decision would end nearly 35 years of news broadcasts on Three. It would also see the closure of Newshub's online operation, which is currently New Zealand's third-largest news website. Around 200 journalists, producers, editors, camera operators and associated staff could lose their jobs, in a move which would leave state-owned TVNZ with a near-monopoly on TV news production.
TVNZ has plenty of journalist who editorialise on the news broadcast. Their influence will grow larger

You're right. There is a startling homogeneity of views in modern mainstream media; RNZ influence will grow as well...

@Kirwan
55 million fund under the condition -
the media organisation must “actively promote the principles of partnership, participation and active protection under Te Tiriti o Waitangi acknowledging Māori as a Te Tiriti partner”. And have a “commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to Māori as a Te Tiriti partner”.Sad.

Worse than just sad. As is this.
It is a plain fact that for media organisations to be eligible for funding they had to sign up to certain criteria and conditions – including forcing certain narratives of the Labour government at the time.
Jacinda Ardern said when addressing the issue of alternative or dissenting views about Covid-19 – "We had to act so we made it a priority to establish a Public Interest Journalism Fund to help our media continue to produce stories that keep New Zealanders informed" i.e. funding media to promote a government narrative – the "single source of truth".

The irony is that much of the public's distrust of the media has been fueled by innuendo, rumour and outright lies from the mouth of the Right Honourable Winston Peters.
Yep. Winston is fuelling a worldwide phenomenon.

-
@booboo Undoubtedly.
It's as good a conspiracy theory as any of the others.
Ridiculous that MSM media are beaten up on (and fairly soi in many countries) but people have turned to social media to get the truth.
Long form journalism is almost dead.

@Kirwan Winnie was spouting lies when Cindy was still at pre-school. So, no.
All the polticians lie, Peters is no different from any of the others there.
He didn't have pet journalists or create a fund to control media output, or say Stalinist crap like the government "is the single source of truth".
Put aside your (fully deserved) dislike of Peters, he hasn't done 1% of the harm that Adhern's government did to trust of media in this country.
-
@Kirwan That's a result of Covid and how accurate you feel your statement is will be a reflection of how well you think Labour did and whether the 'single truth' was a response to massive misinformation 'for the greater good'.
Personally, I think Adern did over-reach but on reflection it didn't really impact journalistic integrity or balance, although it created a situation where there could have been conflicts of interest.
Labour was held to account by media. Increasingly so as time went by. This reflected the broader communities reaction as NZ moved from a collective fanbase to a much less cohesive perspective.
Increased divisiveness and intolerance of conflicting points of view, (globally), is the worst result of the pandemic - IMO.
-
@dogmeat I find it difficult to believe that Winston Peters has so much influence over the NZ
public that he's bringing down the trust of the media in NZ. This is literally a worldwide trend. If we look at the media on a macro level there are 3 narratives that are continually pushed.
- Climate change
- LGBTQA+
- Racial issues and DEI
These 3 narratives are forced almost in every story certain media outlets produces from local weather (climate change!!) to local sports events (pride rounds and DEI).
Now if we were to carefully and dispassionately look at the number of people who were genuinely 100% mad keen about the above 3, as opposed to those who support but are generally nonplussed, or who simply want to be left alone and get on with their lives, or who are genuinely apathetic or see it as irrelevant as they have more pressing issues like paying the mortgage or getting their kids through school, or who simply want their news to deliver things like facts without a narrative being woven into it?? 15%? 20%?
Heck lets be generous and say 50%.
This still leaves 50% of your population/target market alienated and alienated people tend not to give their time and money to the people that alienate them.
They go elsewhere to look for a different news source, or a different narrative, or simply even a different point of view.
My belief is that MSN worldwide these days have a reputation as being "narrative pushers" rather than "truth tellers" and this is leading the decline in trust and popularity of the MSN.
And this is a world-wide trend, not just NZ.
And if people want to say it's social media or twitters "fault" well I don't buy that. If people are leaving your "product" and seeking another "product" then that generally means there's something wrong with your product, or that maybe the alternative product is better...
