on field pre season training started this week, nice big turnout for the boys, making the final last year may have raised our profile a little
Definitely helps. Not sure how we're travelling just yet. Had around a dozen to our pre-pre-season and hopefully numbers build from here.
Looks like our women's program will fold, unfortunately. I got a few new bites but the coach has had enough I reckon and won't be back, particularly after some of our star players defected to a bigger club who do things like Dubai and Las Vegas 7s.
Wanted Colts U21 this year but not enough cohesion with local schools who barely want to know us.
It's a shame because we've got a pro-grade field and a great pub. But we're deep in Western Sydney and there are no organised pathways to funnel 3rd and 4th XV school kids into amateur rugby, and the good guys go play league for money anyway.
sorry to hear about your womens and colts
We haven't had a colts team for years and couldn't field a womens team last year, but both are back this year which is great
Had over 40 for the first session on tuesday with quite a few new faces, fingers crossed we can keep the numbers up
Ive mentioned before we dont have a club room, well...we do but its over a km from our field so there is very little to attract old mates back and too easy to lose people going between the ground and the dungeon, i'll admit to more often than not opting to heading home after the songs are sung and a couple of beers have been had in the changing room...my aim is to hang around at least until we fund/build our new club rooms, all consented etc...just need the final cash

Good plan.
Our pub is a 10 minute drive from the ground but given it is the first time we've been at the same ground for 3 years, it is a matter of taking the victories on offer.

thats a great pitch!
ours is about to have a tent village and temporary stand established for the F1.....

Definitely more fun getting tackled on that compared to a cricket pitch

Awesome timing with pre-season underway.

yeah every year....often have to play the first few games away from home as the pitch hasn't recovered yet
-
This is our training ground in use for the U18s trial
Our game pitch is better.

@KiwiMurph badly needed promotion though.
Until, like, you know ... results ...
We're in Schrodinger's Wallabies period right now - they are both dead and alive until the box is opened.

Confirmed. Bummer.
Bummer mate, hopefully with some girls in line to get paid, could just hopefully encourage some more girls to get into the game !

really sorry to hear that mate, if its any consolation, as i mentioned above, we had to fold our last year but have managed to look like we'll get it back this year, fingers crossed

@NTA local gaelic football club is borrowing one of our two fields to train on....i was very surprised to see a good 100 women down there training last week....was wondering how we might be able to entice some of them over...how is your irish population?
-
@Kiwiwomble not great out here in the West of Sydney - they usually stick to the Eastern Suburbs.
There's meant to be a shitload of Saffers in the area but not sure where the fuck they are.

And now we're probably back to one grade after one guy got the shits and went back to the club he left for us originally, taking players with him.
I'm ready to pack it all in and go referee every second Saturday. Would be less effort TBH and I'd get my weekends back.

Mate I feel for you, I know when despite all your work etc, a personality or 2 can cause loss of players etc. You get to the point of thinking hell if they can all do it so much better maybe it's time to let them. Whatever your decision, whether sticking with what you do or otherwise, only thing I'd say, you have to make decision so that the game doesn't become too much of a burden and that the game loses it's appeal. One of reasons I gave it away after about 25-30 years of rugby admin etc, (and 20 odd playing as kid and man) just said maybe all the 'experts' that have got advice etc should do the mahi (work) and I will just enjoy the game. And I do!!!

I feel your pain. Our club is in the middle of a (long) struggle for identity and it's harming recruitment and retention.
I've already made my mind up to step away after this year.

I think a few of us are at that point. And if we go, it collapses. We've been pushing shit uphill for nearly 7 years to get the club stable, and nothing is working, and nobody wants to take over.
All the advice from the guy who came to see us from RA is great in theory, but one of his opening statements was "when I took over at <eastern suburbs club> they were struggling with only 3 Grades and Colts".
Everyone in our Divisional meeting - clubs with a struggling 2 Grades - chuckled with a mix of amusement and derision.

Yeah, they're remarkably ignorant to the problems clubs face outside of the established ones.
