And another Hamilton try. Napier seem to have entirely given up on tackling. Their attack has been okay, but their defence is terrible. Basically, it's the same as what I already noticed at the beginning of the season.
This try is converted too.
56 - 22 Hamilton

A well-deserved, dominant win to Hamilton Boys. Simply too good, too dominant.
FT: Hamilton 56 - 22 Napier
Napier's problem at the beginning of the season persisted until the end of the Super 8: their tackling, especially in the backs. Their attacking play is generally good, and once the nerves settles, passes often start to stick, but boy, some attrocious defence at times!
It wouldn't surprise me at all, if a Wellington School makes the Top 4, this year and not one of ours. Obviously, I'm still hoping for Napier or Hastings Boys' to deny them that spot. I think - particularly - Napier Boys' will need bad weather to pull that off. Their forwards are as good as anyone's.

Results 5 August 2023
Apart from the disappointing, but not unexpected, result of the Super 8 final, the other two results were also losses:
Hato Pāora College 15 - 13 Te Aute College
St Peter's Cambridge 52 - 14 Lindisfarne CollegeNext weekend, Lindisfarne will play St Paul's Collegiate (away) for 7th place in the CNI, while St John's College will play Rathkeale College for 9th at home.
I haven't seen any info yet about which schools play the challenger match for a spot in the Hurricanes Cup semi-finals. That challenger match should be played on Saturday. My expectation based on previous years is a Palmerston North BHS v Hastings Boys' game in Palmy. Time for revenge for Hastings Boys'; they lost their Super 8 game against Palmy Boys at home.

Confirmed: Hastings Boys' will take on Palmerston North Boys' in the Hurricanes Cup challenger match for a place in the semi-finals, this Saturday. Kick-off is at 12.00pm at Massey Uni.
Unfortunately, because it isn't a Super 8 game, I suspect this game will not be streamed.

Disappointing news. Hastings Boys lost the game to Palmy Boys 22 - 27, after a narrow half-time lead of 14 - 13. That means their season is over and Palmy Boys will play in the Hurricanes Cup semis.
I haven't seen a draw for next weekend, yet. Napier should have a home semi.
-
The other games also didn't go our way.
St John's unexpectedly lost their play-off match 29 - 31 to Rathkeale College, finishing the CNI in 10th and last place.
Lindisfarne College, as expected, lost their game to St Paul's Collegiate 5 - 19 and finished 8th.

That will work out just fine for me!

Just saw a post on Facebook from Manawatū sports journo Peter Lampp. The score of the Palmy v Hastings game was much closer:
Only desperate last-second defence on their own line saw the Palmerston North BHS 1st XV through to a 27-25 win over Hastings BHS at Massey University today.
It was the first round of the Hurricane region knockout. PNBHS must now travel away to take on Napier BHS.
At Taupo, Feilding HS repeated their feat of last year by again beating the Central North Island winners, St John’s College of Hamilton, 24-17 in the final.
Feilding will next play the winners of the Wellington schools final, in their first-round Hurricanes knockout match.
I found this info about the Hurrcianes pathway to the Top 4:
Males Semi-Final Draw- 19th August (kick-off times TBC) (Home team listed first)
Game 1 Super 8 1 (NBHS) vs Super 8 2 (PNBHS)
Game 2 Wellington 1 vs CNI 1 (FAHS)
Final 26th August 2pm, Bill Brown Park (Venue TBC), Palmerston North
So they have already determined the venue for the final, regardless of who are playing.
Also, they're doing everything to avoid a Hurricanes Final between two Super 8 teams, again, like last year, almost guaranteeing that the Wellington team makes the final, because there's no way Feilding will win their semi.
