First impression of Hastings Boys' after their first game. It's early days, but while they have plenty of speed and have good skills, their defence needs work. Their quick line-speed worked well in the first quarter, but gradually became less effective when they started missing more tackles. Speed is definitely something they'll need to rely on, because I don't think they've got the strength when playing the bigger boys.
If I'd had to name a MotM, it would probably be their fullback.
We'll see where they're really at next week, when they play Napier Boys'. Based on only this game, I'd expect Napier Boys' to win that encounter. Hastings' may prove me wrong.

@Stargazer think he was previously Lindisfarne. Typical HBHS stealing talent from the factory.

@Magpie_in_aus Yeah, he made switch this year, I think.

Bahahaha. Taking back a chequebooked player isn't stealing. (I think he's Star Timu's younger brother and Roger Randle's nephew).

Beautiful try scored by Napier first-five Luke Thomas. A kick from the Hastings' kicker was charged down and Khan Stevenson went for a run, offloaded and Thomas scored under the crossbar. He can't convert his own try right from in front
5 - 3 Napier.

Napier playing much better now than at the beginning of the game when they were impatient, and passes didn't stick and the ball got turned over several times.
A bit of an injury break for Luke Thomas, who needed a bit of treatment after getting hurt in scoring his try. Maybe that was why he missed the easy kick.
15 minutes played.

Penalty Napier. Line-out on the 5m line. Maul ... pick and go .. try time! Hooker Juan Ross scores Napier's second try.
Fullback Jacob Cotter is taking over the kicking duties. Difficult angle ... he misses the conversion.
10 - 3 Napier after 19 minutes
