Black Caps v South Africa

Yep I'm a fan of not enforcing the follow on and absolutely demoralising the other team but making them chase more than 500.
@MN5 I was going to say the same, I remember 2 metre Peter hitting those tons and one of them was up around the 140 mark I think? Though there may be some old school person like Turner that has done it as well.

Glad we batted again. Conway needs every innings he can get.
Plus, the resting, 30 degrees, etc etc
It seems to be the fashion these days doesn't it? IIRC I've questioned the strategy some time ago, but teams almost never enforce the follow on now

Yeah - Dravid and Laxman reset people's views; having to bowl again runs the risk of the bowlers cooking, and then having to chase a modest total in the worst conditions of the match. Far easier to go out, knock the ball aroudn with no pressure, and then have a good bowl at the opposition.
This is possibly affected by modern batting too; who can block out bowlers for a long time? It's a skill that hasn't been in demand for some time

He leaves Hayden, Root and Chanderpaul behind in career hundreds.
One behind the Aussie Steves - Smith and Waugh now. 21 innings less than SS. 90 innings less than SW.
Only Smith and Tendulkar got to 31 Test 100's quicker as well
Also another cool stat, in the 9 tests hes played while Southee has been captain hes scored over 1100 runs, has hit a total of 7 x 100's, no 50's and averages 80.00

@KiwiPie
That would be Graham Gooch for the poms
hes scored 300 odd in one bat and followed it with a 100 in his 2nd.Best on debut is surely Lawrence Rowe.
His first three scores in tests were 214, 100*, 22.
Momentarily he averaged 336 - the highest for a player who has been dismissed at least once*.
*Assuming no-one has surpassed this in recent times - I haven't paid as much attention as I used to.

Even though we've almost certainly got enough, I would bat on tomorrow and take the Jaaps completely out of the game - even mathematically - set them 600 in 5.5 sessions.
Need to ensure we remove that "never beaten them in a series" and giving their bowlers a bit more work will help a bit in test 2.
They are now. Declare 10 mins before start of play. Fucks with their head enough.
Almost certainly, but 88 runs per session will get them there and that is mathematically doable - so I would have crushed that by batting for an hour this morning.

....my plan wouldn't have Brand out yet, though!
First hour is going to be lethal for batting. Don't think the game will still be going by the time I can get back there.
Moore agrees with you, as well!

Assuming this test ends badly for South Africa as it looks it will, and the 2nd test goes the same way
Something tells me this will be the last time they will take part in a series in NZ while their local T20 comp is going.
No way they will want to suffer this type of humiliation again. -

No way they will want to suffer this type of humiliation again.Yeah but remember they got hammered by an innings in the first test in 2022 only to come back and win the second.
That will surely be in the back of everyoneβs mind much as it seems impossible to contemplate that happening again.

Indian and Pakistan fans on Social media having a field day going on about KW being a flat track bully with his two tons against a weak SA team.
Average of 67 at home with 18 hundreds. Ungodly stats.
But 13 hundreds away at 45 is still a damn site better than most. Even in this age of slightly inflated batting averages compared to previous eras an average over 40 is a class player.
Of course thereβs no convincing those bone heads of that.
