Black Caps v Australia

The only difference here is Cam Green's knock in the first. Their other 19 innings amount to not much.

For some reason, we have a lot of guys struggling for form. Even though Kane made a shit ton of runs vs SA - he didn't look particularly fluent making them.
We have a terrible domestic season structure. Where red ball goes into hiatus for 3 months and the Super Smash takes about 5 or 6 weeks to complete.
This is papered over when we have a generational talented team, but rares its head when we revert to the mean.
Exascerbated even more by the busy winter. And players going on month long rest or injury hiatuses in January (Ravindra, Mitchell, Blundell) and having the form sucked out of them.

@Chris-B got to replace Labuschagne. Mentally he's shot
Yeah - I'd drop Smith down to 3 - he's not really an opener - so was likely to give us an opening. I think Marnus has averaged 30 in the past 12 months - across quite a lot of tests - whereas during his purple period he averaged 70+.
I think Cam Green was only averaging about 32 at the start of this test and Head and Marsh are always a chance to go cheaply, so there's some vulnerability.
It's annoying that Cam chose this test to make his statement!

Bus change got a couple of 60 odds against Pakistan earlier this year. He’s not doing too bad. He was never gonna maintain that ridiculous average.

It’s actually bordering on unbelievable the complete lack of mental fortitude the Black Caps have when it comes to playing Australia…
What's unbelievable to me is the optimism on here that this weak Black Caps side were going to trouble the best side in the world
I always knew we were going to get pumped. This is a shadow of the WTC winning side

I wasn't expecting to win, but I was hoping to have a lot fewer keystone cops moments...

See you're the Wallaby fan who says "if we didn't concede those two tries just after half time, the game was dead even".
Then next game "oooh if only those couple of 50/50 calls go our way, the scoreline looks completely different"
And then "Man if we held onto that last pass I reckon we would have scored, and then we'd be within 6 with ten to play!"
It's like looking in a mirror.

Australia would have smashed us back in the 80s if it wasn’t for Hadlees 15 wickets in a single match that’s for sure.

@barbarian and like the Wallabies, when the stars align they can beat the best. We really, really wanted the stars to align this series given how rare it is, but it turned into a comedy of errors from many of our senior players.
And that was a pretty special innings from Cam Green in the context of the match.

You don't even need the stars to align, you just have to not shit the bed. The Wallabies are a pretty good team, as are the Black Caps. Both have won trophies, produced some legends of the game, when they are at their best they can beat anyone.
The thing that frustrates fans is the consistent underperformance against one specific Trans- Ta$man opponent. Where a competent team is reduced to actions that should be accompanied by Benny Hill-style yakkety sax. Balls bouncing off heads, mid-pitch collisions, etc etc

Stead needs to go. He's admitted they they got their bowling selections wrong for the second test in a row. I expect he won't play Santner in Chch either.
Now there is the prospect of tossing Sears into the fray. Stead should go, and take Timmee with him. We are going to get brutalized in Christchurch

Surprised to see this hasnt been mentioned
Ross Taylor isnt the sort of person to make up drama so you have to take this as been very likely to be true.
Even the Aussies were suprised Wagner wasnt picked, yes hes the player he was but then why is Southee captain and being picked... -
It's a bit of a 'no shit sherlock' for me.
Ross Taylor was basically forced to retire, as was Neil Wagner. Because they weren't doing it themselves.
That's not a criticism of them. They're supposed to be competitive and believe in themselves, and it is our 'job' (and the coach and captains and selector's job) to recognise when they can't.
A bit indulgent IMO, both should have been dropped before their last 'farewell series/tests'. Certainly nothing to get knickers in a twist about, IMO, except that the coach/selectors have been too weak to make changes early enough. hence this long, long steady decline & death by a thousand cuts.
Sears is possibly debuting v Australia tomorrow after an injury 'crisis', while Wagner got a soft South Africa C farewell just a fortnight ago, coz feelings. That's dumb IMO. Wasted opportunity.
