Chapman is very disappointing. I think it is time we gave up on him and tried a new bit part player. That is especially so given he doesn't bowl any more.
Yeah - I didn't have great hopes for this series and am pleased we only got really pumped in one game - plus a few pleasing innings and bowling stints - mainly by Ferg.
I'd prefer to see Jimmy Neesham played as our closer rather than Chapman - but, we shouldn't plan for Jimmy to bowl unless someone breaks down.
I think Jimmy still has the highest ceiling of any of our batters for someone who will face no more than 10 balls. A man for the Super over!
Chapman hasn't covered himself with glory fielding in this series, either.
-
@Chris-B RE: Chapman the shame of it is he was exceptional in his first few domestic seasons. He looked poised and appeared to have good technique and destined for greatness. He also had a decent ability to send down some weird spinners that did look worthwhile.
He's just never really made it. I would prefer Neesham by some distance at this point.
Is he the cricket equivalent of Toeava?
-
That sucked.
Sadly it was men against boys out there, in all facets.
When/how did our batsmen become so unable to get bat on ball. Sitting through those 10 overs of BC’s batting was like watching someone die a slow painful death.
Throw all the rain breaks on top of that, feel sorry for the kids having that as their first Black Caps experience. My 8 year old reckons he would have even smashed a few more sixes than the Black Caps, and based on todays evidence he might be right.
-
@Damo I think Chapman makes the squad, but I'm doubtful he makes the XI. I would have Jimmy in as a specialist batsman. If everyone is in form, I think my first XI would be something like....
Allen
Conway
Williamson
Mitchell
Phillips
Neesham
Ravindra
Santner
Henry
Ferguson
SearsBut, Sears could be replaced by any of Boult, Milne, or Southee - maybe Ish if it is really, really spin friendly.
Aim to get four overs out of Phillips/Ravindra/Neesham/Mitchell.
-
I think that some of the gloom over the series is a bit overstated.
We were without Williamson and Mitchell for all of it and then Conway and Ravindra for the last two.
We don't have batting depth outside of our core batting lineup but that is not surprising.
We were also one dodgy finish to an over away from winning the first one.
All in all I am not overly pessimistic about our performances.
The one big plus for me was Ferguson who I thought bowled very well. Does anyone know why he was dropped for the last one? If it is just to give him a rest I have to question whether resting him rather than letting him bowl 4 overs is really what he needs.

He's just never really made it.
It was only last year he was nominated as one of four for ICC world T20i player of the year. Depends what you call “not making it”.
OK possibly I stand corrected. He may well have done well in some games i didn't see.
However I can only go on what I see. What I have watched he seems to be well below the standard that I hoped to see when he fittest emerged. I cannot ever recall him dominating an attack.
I will admit that I may have missed some performances.

Last comment from me.
I think it is an indictment on cricket that super rugby has started already without us really having had a summer of cricket. I mean we've had Bangles for something, Pakistan for a few T20s, a sham of a test series against SA and only now the season kicks off proper with a decent team and in the media it's all about the bloody super rugby.
I love my rugby but let's wait til mid March for goodness sake.

Word to this post.
Australia coming here is huge and I’m glad it is being treated as such judging from the ticket sales for the test series.
They’re officially the best team in the world.
( @NTA @Virgil I expect comments from both of you please )
I can pretty much be guaranteed not to watch a Super Rugby game til about April at the very earliest.
-
Won’t hear me complaining about there being too much sport on.
Watch one, record the other and stay off social media until you’ve watched the replay.. simple formula (most of the time)
But in saying that, can’t blame rugby for crickets poor scheduling this summer. As you say the Aussies have just arrived… and summer is over.
Rugby has started this early for 20 odd years, and they won’t be changing that anytime soon.

Such is the infrequency of Australia's Test tours to their closest neighbours, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, who both debuted in 2011 and have played a combined total of 147 matches, have never played a Test match in New Zealand.
Here's the full list of Tests between the countries: Aus v NZ Tests

Thats something that has never really changed, infrequency playing tests vs Australia.
Despite being only a few hours by plane away.
Oz have always prioritized series against England, India and pretty much everyone else but us.
Was understandable when we were weak but given we made 2 ODI WC finals in a row and won the first WTC you would think we could ask for more tests/ODI's...but no. -

They gave us a 3 test series, including the boxing day test. And we shat the bed.
It's hard to tour Aus. Really hard. Almost as hard as India.
-
They also toured in 2016 and we went there at the end of 2015 and they beat us 2-0 in both series, effectively losing the 5 tests that we played them in 2015/16 4-0.
