I’m possibly jinxing him but I’ll point out that Steve Smith is currently second on the list of test averages for all batsmen who’ve scored over 7000 runs at test level. Smith 9467 at 58.43 while Walter Hammond got 7249 at 58.45.
Smith is so damn good, the chances of him failing in Melbourne were ridiculously low.

Same demographics as our blackcaps. We had an all over 30s side about a year ago. Probably a few matches now with that makeup.
Edit. Actually I'm not surprised these 2 teams have aged together. I remember back in the 2011 test series between these 2 teams and being very excited at the upcoming decade for the blackcaps. Then looking at the Aussie team (who were debuting Warner, Starc, Hazelwood, Pattinson) and going, "ah goddammit!".

I think our pace lineup is just that crucial bit order and more beaten up than theirs.
