What I've always liked about Ajaz since he first appeared in the 2018 Pakistan series, is that on the field he looks like playing international cricket for NZ is the best thing ever.
He looked so stoked in that first series, and seems to have kept the enthusiasm up.
Ten wickets in an innings will certainly do that to a mans enthusiasm.
Hell, a kiwi spinner getting six is freakish like he just did.
Surely they have to pick him at home now which may mean Santner misses out depending on the balance of the side ?
I don't think either Patel or Santner have any hope of playing at home unless the groundskeepers specifically start creating pitches that are going to spin. Spinners barely bowl when playing in NZ and Philips can make the team purely as a batter.
This would be my preferred 11 for SA and Australia but it's like Nicholls plays instead of Ravindra.
Conway
Latham
Williamson
Mitchell
Phillips
Ravindra
Blundell
Jamieson
Southee
Wagner
Boult (I believe he has said he is keen to play)Henry for Boult
,Boult will not be available he has signed for MI Emirates in the ILT20, the UAE T20 league, which is played in January and February. -

There’s that word “great” being thrown around liberally again.
BEEN "great" and A "great" are very different things in my opinion. I have used "been great".
Who tf is Sam Wells? Where did he come from? I dislike him already.

Yeah was only a partial dig at you
Apparently Astle and McMillan were great which I have an issue with.
Just cos they played quite a bit doesn’t make them great, our history is hardly littered with world class batsmen after all.

My 11 for next test. I still go with 4 seamers at home.
Latham
Ravindra
Williamson
Conway
Mitchell
Phillips
Blunders
Jamieson
Henry
Southee
O'RourkeAlthough it is 2 or 3 months away, so have to see how O'Rourke goes in his white ball opportunities.
Absolutely must, for me, that we move on from Wagner now, but have doubts that Sam Wells, as an age and Otago Volts contemporary of Wagner, may be too close. (Let alone the obvious player power on selections by the senior players)
-
@MN5 Relatively great?
Is this the Sam Wells that we now have as a selector?
"Sam Wells' call-up to the New Zealand Test squad in 2012 was such a surprise that initially even his girlfriend didn't believe him. An allrounder who cemented his place in the Otago side in the 2009-10 season, Wells himself thought it would take longer for him to be elevated to the Test level. A left-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pacer, he averaged almost 60 with the bat in that breakthrough season and collected 21 wickets as well. He described his role in the team as someone who "bats around seven or eight and bowls 12-15 overs a day". He is something of a first-class specialist, and has struggled to get a sustained run in Otago's limited-overs sides."

It does look like the black Caps team is "jobs for the boys".

Well yeah, certainly great compared to others of their era.

More floating turds, than cream rising to the top then? Might have taken that analagy a bit far...
They certainly had their days of being great. Comparing eras is folly as we all know anyway. At least the last test will have dragged some averages down, it wasn't exactly one of the modern batters' paradises.

For sure. With the exception of Nicholls ( who is a great regardless of stats ) the top seven all average 40+ which on paper is fucken amazing !
EDIT: Blundell dragging the chain with 39.8 after this test.
Mitchell also dipping, now below KW.
I’m still unsure whether Conway is gonna be excellent, very good or good. Mitchell is boosted ( compared to Conway ) with a few extra not outs which is obviously an advantage the middle order have over the top order.

NZC in general seems to operate that way. The White Ferns on and off field have been just as bad at that in recent years.

Any reason Conway is being demoted ? Didn’t shine vs Bangladesh but who really did ?
Is Ravindra really an opening option at test level ?

Maybe (I don't know what he's been doing since he retired). The other probable explanation, to me, is they want a guy with a profile too low to challenge the current leadership. They wouldn't want an e.g. Stephen Fleming in that role with enough mana to win actual difficult, but necessary, selection arguments.

Conway should stay opening,
Too tough a gig throwing Ravindra in to opening in tests different game than white ball by quite a stretch.
let Ravindra find his feet in the lower middle order and work his may up, which is normally the way Test cricket teams are selected unless you are an established opener. -
@MN5 said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:

Not particularly. Any of 3 out of those guys can open, any of the 3 would have merit dropping to middle order (e.g Latham being good v spin, Conway being the least specialist opener, Ravindra being the pup.
I chose Conway as not being the specialist, but not a hill I'd die on.
As Long as it isn't a Ravindra at 7 and everyone shuffle up 1 spot. That would make me pull my hair out. Need clear messaging on roles.

200 on debut is pretty handy for an opener. I think they need to keep him there despite a ( relatively ) lean patch since then.
Phillips being the all rounder ( either that or batsman who bowls a bit ) or Blundell should take the seven spot.

Mitchell's spot?
-
@Rapido said in Black Caps - Bangladesh tour:
But to be less glib & pedantic .
I'd keep Mitchell at 5, with the attacking license.
Make a top 4 with Ravindra in it somewhere.
I would have Mitchell at 4 he has earned the right to bat up.
More time at the crease for Mitchell is better for the team.
3 and 4 are prime batting spots in test cricket.
