NRL 2024

It's a little more difficult to hit someone around the waist when they drop substantially in the last step. If I was defence counsel I'd certainly be pointing this out. Also that midgets should take responsibility for being short...
But kudos to the referee (which isn't something I say in NRL) for having the balls to send him in a SoO.

For anyone that missed the tackle last night you can watch it below, pretty much launch himself at Walsh's head.

correct me if i am wrong here, but the offending player was sent off, in the 8th minute, of the 2nd biggest game of the year? That happened right? So the game took steps to punish a player for sparking out one of their athletes?
Just checking, as a league watching moron.

It was a tackle that was too hard to ignore but the response from the commentators and the players said it all really. League is renowned for letting bad tackles slide and allowing players to carry on playing when they are clearly in distress. Kudos to the officiating team last night for acting accordingly, it needs to happen more often.
You only have to go back to the Warriors and Roosters game earlier in the year and one player was stumbling around for a good couple mins after being concussed, a doctor didn't even come on to check him, and he carried on playing for the remainder of the game. It's an area league clearly needs to do better at instead of the 'man up' mentality that infiltrates that game to it's core.

For a game that had a final margin of 30+ points, and was 13-on-12 for 72 minutes, that was a pretty good watch.
NSW started on fire, and then Qld score with their first opportunity. Red card happens, but what people don't seem to be commenting on is, that hit didn't stop a huge linebreak, that right edge of NSW was in for a long night no matter what.
Then NSW were down a centre which is fatal for your edge defense whether he is replaced or not (as shown at NRL level repeatedly this year) and Qld ruthlessly exploited it. Being a man short AND having a guy like Deardon dragging in defenders with foot speed means Cobbo and Hammer were running in to huge holes. Bang bang and it's 20 early points.
At that point Qld switched off and NSW actually switched on, and for the next 40 minutes they were the better side. They had all teh energy, all the linespeed, all the aggression. And all Qld could do was truck it out of their own end, and get forced in to errors.
NSW runs out of energy, and a Qld team picked to be dangerous at the back end was exactly that.I am really keen for game 2, and what changes are made. I think Qld are a big middle short. NSW need a halfback (Moses) and a fullback (literally anyone other than Squid James who spent the night proving why he was dropped in the first place). For NSW their bench was really good, Leniu and Olakuato added heaps. I am not sure Yeo works at Origin level though.
For Qld, the guys who stood up when it was dicey were the veterans. DCE is a fucking Qld immortal. What a player he has grown in to. And he's genuinely one of the league's good guys. Ben Hunt is so good when his teammates aren't complete spuds.
I think NSW will be heartened by so much of last night though

this is an idiotic comment that shows how little league you watch. jog on.

Leading with the shoulder makes a lot of that irrelevant. Even if Walsh was upright, that's an illegal tackle for both late (ball well gone), high-ish, and leading with the shoulder.
-
On the red card, have to say, i was preparing to launch in to a "only a yellow? for that?" but as soon as Klein told Jurbo to not say a word i knew he was going.
I feel a bit sorry for Sua'ali'i. Smash Reece Walsh was a clear directive. And he's gone for a huge shot that's gone very wrong. He's aimed too high and Walsh slips right at the crucial millisecond. But the end result was a shoulder to the head at extreme force that sparked Walsh out. Red card all fucking day.
-
nd leading with the shoulder
I hate this comment that everyone loves to make in these situations. Every tackle leads with the shoulder. If it doesn't you aren't doing it right. The arm was coming, but Walsh was in the twilight zone before it got there. Walsh being a midget and Joey being huge doesn't help that.

Nah. Had Walsh not slipped and the shoulder hit him fair in the sternum, everyone would be raving about a "Origin Hit".

Classic league fan response when anyone brings up a flaw in the game. If you don't think league can do better to consistently protect their players then that says it all really.
The fact the coach of NSW was surprised Joseph was sent off for a reckless shot like that proves my point, because it barely bloody happens.

pretty much agree with this, although as I pointed out earlier, the amount of times a back has had to be replaced (through incident, illegal or not), shows exactly why Slater had his bench mix right and Madge didn't.
Would it have changed the outcome, no I don't think so.
I wasn't overly concerned with Tedesco's performance although I do think Edwards was a step up.
Still a lot of talk about Hynes not up to this level and to be honest I saw very little to change my mind on that. When I think of halves that have an influence on the game, I don't have to look further than the two pinpoint kicks late from DCE, that just showed his class. One for a 40/20 and the other at full speed puts in a cross kick that pulls up just in time for Coates. Seriously amazing skill.
As for Hynes, if he gets dropped does he take that to the Sharks mentally who bottled their season around now the same time last year?
A lot to be happy about for NSW, but Qld too good last night for sure.
-
Bullshit yellow in my view. Vaa’i was falling into him.
What a fucking joke rugby is aye.
especially after that bullshit red. This you @Canes4life ? Just checking.
-
@mariner4life difference between a player launching at a guys head (Joseph) and a player positioning himself at a low position and then collecting a guy that is dipping (Tuputupu on Vaa'i).
Whether I agree with the Tuputupu tackle or not at least Union don't have the stigma of letting shit slide on a regular basis. Thankfully they got it right last night but consistency would be great.
-
Interestingly Reece Walsh passed his HIA on the night, however it was deemed a Cat 1, means
a) he could not come back on
b) triggered the 18th man
c) will still have to stand down for the Broncos..but no duty of care of course for the player -
could also mean Paul Gallen was right all along and that Queenslanders do have two heads

yeah we made the same point there. It has happened so often this year with guys getting ruled out with concussion (which certain people would know if they actually watched games) that i thought it was a good move. Having a full time fullback be able to come in and play fullback was definitely a bonus as well.
Hynes was very ordinary, and the Blues attack was shithouse. Both tries came from kicks, and kicks that were the afterthought after the first option broke down. And Qld's first try was off the back of the 7 tackle set from Hynes kicking dead. Though it would be churlish to blame Nicho for the easy metres QLd made in that set.
The other thing that won't help Hynes was his defense was awful.

80% of Lomax's kicks this year have come from kicks..and how many attacking kicks did Hynes try? lol about 2, Hynes didn't do well enough at all

both the same circumstances, upward trajectory at guys slipping, but at different speeds. Rugby got theirs wrong, not league. You are just inconsistent depending on what jersey they wear, kinda like Madge above.
What gets let slide by the way? Those tackles happen so very rarely that it is a surprise. On the flip side, guys get taken out of games every weekend for failing HIAs. Because, you know, that's how you protect your athletes.
Just admit your comment is at least a decade out of date and we can all move on
