the burden of being top of the table and having so many outstanding players taking votes off each other
(yes im going to milk this until at least sat afternoon)
the first few rounds for sydney were funny as the same guys polled votes in different order.
another year where a gun player had an almighty drop off in form that seemed to coincide with him become ineligible for the Brownlow.
yeah, the cynic in me says they deliberately dont vote for him so as not to risk him winning but not being eligible...but more likely he let his head drop for a couple of games
His form did drop off after the ban, but so did the Swans generally in that six week block. I definitely think the umps had his ban in their heads, but I don't know if it actually cost him many votes.

the biggest news of GF week is that
Katy Perry isn't allowed to play her smash it "Roar" as it is deemed to favourable to the Lions. sad. was looking forward to that anthem.
-
This is the greatest day in a long, long time.
Today was destiny shit. Eric with the sharp goal. Berry redemption arc.
We're the best and it's amazing
-
@Kiwiwomble good season dude, making a GF is massive. Don't let the stupid Melbourne talking heads dissuade you from how often Horse has you in contention.
-
Congrats @mariner4life
Feel good story for the Lions - so close last year - played their best when it counted - entertaining team to watch.

Now that I'm sober
Wow. That was amazing. Dominant from our first goal until we were already celebrating. Huge performances out if everyone. Players I have abused all year standing up.
The 2nd quarter was surreal. I actually started to feel sorry for the Sydney defence as Pur midfield just smashed Sydney and the ball just kept coming in. Goal, win clearance, go back inside 50. 7 goals 4 and that was all she wrote.
And even though I tried to create my own stress in the 3rd by waiting for the fuckening, we just kept slamming it forward. Absolutely dominant through thr middle. And when Sydney did win it Pur defence towelled up Sydney's forwards too.
I thought starcevic was BoG but Ashcroft was a decent winner. Berry, mccluggage, Neal and ashcroft killed Sydney's stars. Dunkley won't get the headlines but he sacrificed his own game to keep Henney to 14 touches and no impact. How good was Darcy Fort? Absolutely smashed Grundy.
Lohmann is already a genuine star, Ah Chee almost our best all finals, Rayner with the usual amazing mark and goal.
Awesome performance.

damn it....Lions were just too good, i have no idea how you manage to shut down all our big names at the same time, normally you double up on one or two guys leaving one of our other super stars to shine....but the lions were just one one one better all over the pitch....like i had to ask if grundy and rampe were on the pitch because the Lions were just winning everything in midfield and sending it straight inside 50....it was mad
4 finals in the last ten years is great....but losing 4 finals starts to become a hoodoo...and some real hidings isn't good
this was our year i think as there are a few rumours going around about guys moving on

At this stage the flag winner will come from Geelong, either of the Sydney teams, and maybe Carlton or Melbourne. No one else has the game to beat these 5 teams.
Everyone else is seriously flawed and making up the numbers@mariner4life said in AFL 2024:
I hate AFL 2024, just so much.
That is the Lions done for the year. And i am pissed about it. That list should not be missing finals despite the injuries.

@barbarian said in AFL 2024:I'd give some thought to trading Joe Daniher as well. Unsure of his contract situation, but I don't think his best days are ahead of him.
A few lessons in those comments. Such a long season these days, feels like timing your run is more important than being generally the best team through the first four months.
-
definitely has been a change over the past few years where timing your run is everything. Winning 9 straight does change things a bit, but extended runs like often drain a team. But for the Lions we seemed to go okay. Dropping those last 2 was annoying, but you can't knock the finals campaign. Our elimination and the GF were over at half time. One of the biggest comebacks ever in the semi, and another comeback in the prelim.
I've had to eat a few words i have said about Chris Fagan over the journey as well. Pappa Fages never lost his belief. I do think he learned a few lessons and really leaned in to our ability to score rather than play tempo footy. But the belief he inspired in the team, and the way he got even our spuds regularly coming in clutch is a masterclass of man management.
-
thats whats great about a proper long season, you can have ups and downs in form, youre not talking about make or break games 5 games into the season, you have time to make rookies into experienced campaigners in one season
-
GF aside, the AFL soap opera rolls on, as we go straight in to draft and trade period.
We've already had Carlton lowballing Port for Houston. Rumours of a Sydney exodus. People wanting to "move home".
And we just had a Brisbane team beat a Sydney team in the GF so the shit Victorian teams are having a whinge about all our perceived advantages. Father/Son is apparently an advantage because of the Ashcroft boys. Completely ignoring most F/S end up being very average, and it's not like only some guys are able to have kids. Also look at all those Daicos and Libbas playing at Brisbane.

And you want to take away the academy discounts? Get the AFL to take over the running of the development rather than getting the Suns, Lions and Swans to pay for it all.
What you mean is, you want these academies to go away so we go back to all the players being from down south so you can pick them up for cheap later when they want to go home.
