The Bay vs The Ranfurly Shields holders
That wouldn't be entirely accurate would it?

Was really surprised to see the amount of players the Bay had back against Ta$man at the end of storm week. Hoping the main league type story of this week keeps the focus off the rugby to help prep for the QF.
-
I think the Shield saga makes this game even harder to read now. Think we will get one of the extremes... Hawkes may come out firing with a big siege mentality from the week they're going through. Or it may all be too big a distraction if key players are out? I'm glad I don't have to tip this game...

@frugby RTS wasn't dropped by Auckland Rugby either after "partying way too hard" and subsequently being charged with drink-driving. And that even didn't make the media AFAIK.
Wasn't that not during the season though (not excusing the behaviour, but think that is the main point of concern?)
-
@frugby No, it was the morning after the game v Manawatu (played on 30 August), and he started and played the full 80 minutes in the next game v Southland (played on 3 September).
Edited to add that a fully fit player's body can handle this if it isn't a weekly habit. Drinking alcohol promotes dehydration and delays the body's recovery from physical exercise.
Drink too much too often, and it will become a problem for an athlete.
-
I reckon its shit that they can play....I mean from a standards and organisation standpoint they should have things in place that these players are supported but not avoid consequences. What I mean by that is if you have things like this occur its an automatic X amount of weeks stand-down and attending counselling/help etc.
He had passengers as well this could easily be a lot worse then a dented fence. The courts will deal out the community punishment but I think teams/organisations should be firm on these things. You will be punished but we want to support you through this. For players it will be a ticking-the-box exercise, some will change behaviour for awhile and for some hopefully give them tools to not do some of this stupid stuff.
HB is the example at the moment but this is systemic.

football organisations prioritising winning games of football is a worldwide phenomenon

I think the players should be able to play. I also think the shield should be taken off HB.
Of course, if it was Auckland, then it would just be a case of lads being lads...

Whats soccer got to do with this?
But yeah I know, being lax for organisations is the easier way. Its like the bullshit the AB's use to have the no dickhead policy. Biggest joke given the amount of drink drivers/sleeping pill users/domestic abusers/idiots that played during this era. Its just something that's easy to say when you are winning everything and dominating.
I wonder if we can roll that out for HB seeing we just won the shield/s.

Instead of standing them down for an x-number of matches, I'd like players who abuse substances and still drive, to be forced to do community work with the victims of drink (and drug)-driving. Not sure who can organise that; maybe via victim support? Confront them with the misery it can cause, sometimes life-long disabilities or death of a loved one. Make them work (for free) at a rehabilitation centre. In fact, I'd like all those convicted of drink-driving to do that, because frankly, this has nothing to do with rugby/sport. Our society has a serious problem with alcohol (and other substance) abuse.
Also make them follow extra courses on nutrition and the effect alcohol has on the body and exercise (recovery). It's bad enough that NZ has this awful drinking culture, but sportspeople should really understand (or be made to understand) that drinking affects their athletic performance if they drink regularly during the season and even more so if they drink too much.

Yeah I agree. I have always believed certain careers are a privilege sports person is one of them. I thought Russell Packer should have not been allowed to play NRL again. Although I was very torn after listening to this great podcast interview he was on.
I actually refused to watch a minute of the warriors while they had Matt Lodge on the team. He went to the USA and while drunk/high assaulted a poor guy in his house and also told a female some pretty horrible things. A friend who was on the medical team at the broncos said he was toxic and that's why the broncos paid to get rid of him, then the warriors did the same. Saw him at the local park a few weeks after the warriors cut him and he was abusing some guy in the parking lot...obviously could have been the other guys fault but the dudes a dick.
Regardless of if they improve their behaviour following serious misconduct they can be reformed in another career....it won't happen but I can only hope.

"qf-the-bay-v-coke-snorting-historical-artefact-wreckers"
this thread title is factually wrong// only alleged, isn't it? They only found coke on the shield? To paraphrase that great Watts song, "The Shield's Been Snorting"
