Some strange calls both ways - players look confused
That pass which was clearly forward from the hands and no TMO intervention. Rugby does itself no favours when it is so amateur.
I was very relieved when it wasn't reviewed and didn't really understand why it wasn't
After the first replay I was hoping to see them cut to a hastily taken conversion to avoid a TMO review. But neither happened.
Conversions don't stop TMO reviews anymore

Northland got a penalty late in the 1st half for BOP offside at the lineout when the throw was clearly not straight. There was definitely doubt about Tua's try as well.
Thought Tua’s try was ok. Not sure that BOP’s first try was ok. He was either part of the ruck and can’t pick it up, or he has to come from behind to pick it up and he was standing in front at all times.

I usually try and avoid bagging refs, but this guy was dreadful, even if I were neutral I'd be shaking my head at some of his howlers. Forward passes, knock ons, obstructions.. the list goes on. We've had him before in a few matches and it seems he really doesn't like us much.. it's like a preconceived notion that he'll set out to blow us off the park everytime.
But... once again we were our own worst enemies, we shouldn't put ourselves in these positions to allow refs to stomp all over us. I felt that, bar the breakdown area, BOP weren't that crash hot, and we should have really put them away tonight.
I could see the ideas we had planned with kicking for territory etc, but the kicks were generally straight down the throats of BOP receivers, or poorly executed box kicks. On the few occasions we got it to the edges we looked good, it just didn't happen enough. We also gave possession away easily, and this put too much pressure on our defence which in turn caused us to run out of gas. Same crap different week.
On a positive you can see what template Leslie is trying to build, and with some tweaking to our personnel next season we could break the shackles somewhat and actually push for more victories on a consistent basis.
Still one more to go against Auckland, and I would hope we go out there and really stick it to them to finish on a high in what's been a below average season. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

@J77 yea, we just leave too much in the hands of the ref.
Both teams were average, but for most of it we were probably less average...
Our accuracy at the breakdown was poor, although several turnovers or pivotal moments at breakdowns were made by someone offside.
But our accuracy at the breakdown is baffling given the players we have there, often seemed to leave one side exposed.
Huge drop off from our top 2 9s too, similarly Moulds is clear our best 2, even his throwing was good last night, highlighted by us losing 2 out of the 1st 3 after he went off.
Our scrum was pretty solid most of the night, although Rebolo got moved a number of times and ref was a bit inconsistent here as the 2nd half his whistle went in his pocket for infringements we got done for.
Oddly a couple of times ref blew up advantage well before he gave either team a chance for it to play out, but the one time he did let it run after looking to blow it, Murray scored a sensational try.

Three of BOP tries had major reffing issues - picking the ball up in the ruck or from in front, clear forward pass, clear knock on.
Be nice to know how NZRFU are working to improve reffing. Just like players make mistakes, so do refs. But nowadays it is easier to get calls right. You have ref, touch judges, and TMO. I have always been a huge fan of TMO, which should be used in every try ( because that’s where every fan bitches and moans ) and love what NRL do where a team has one challenge. I don’t understand why we wouldn’t do this? The major issues with the speed of the game are players milking time for set pieces, kicks etc, and breaking defensive systems. So TMO reviews on try’s are an easy fix.
Also the NRL referral system is better than the card system which destroys the competition during the game. Plus they have a guy who speaks publicly on behalf of the refs saying they were right or wrong on decisions - the silence in rugby is just frustrating.
I know NZRFU has abandoned the NPC but the lack of agility in innovation is criminal. With the NPC at least they can make their own rules. With proper competition management and a bit of love the NPC could be used to lead world rugby and move the dial.

@kev yeah sadly alot of rules in rugby don't make the refs job very easy.
So they will inevitably get alot of stuff wrong or miss simple stuff which can and often will affect the outcome.
I think they either embrace technology or ignore it, not be choosy about when they use it.
I still love watching Northland (well I don't love watching them lose, but you know) and always will, but above this level i certainly am not as invested in the game as I once was, and without some changes to how things are going I can't see that changing anytime soon..

@taniwharugby I must admit to being a lot more passionate about Northland in NPC than any other level including the ABs. Overall my passion for rugby is waning - it’s not because of the coach either. The game is not what it was.

I watched and enjoyed game as a neutral.
On the ref, he (I thought) missed a few things, and the players certainly made a lot more mistakes than the ref. I actually wonder if that also is why I love the NPC so much? Sports isn't meant to be perfect, and I can live with a few mistakes form players and refs.
I would somehow prefer this in games than the game that is played at almost robotic style we get too often at higher levels where you almost get the impression that things are played with a plan for every outcome and not enough of just doing stuff off the cuff?
I actually think at higher level it's going towards league almost, which worries me. -
@Dan54 mistakes are one thing, not being upto it is another (talking generally, not just last night)
Look over any RWC thread (in fact most match threads) and so much chat is on the ref, there are even comments of corruption (that I flat out don't agree with) and seems more and more errors out there are having an impact on the game.
As I have said before, I watch alot of club footy too, they make errors too, but still enjoy it more.
For me it highlights that there are issues with the game, there seems to be alot of people like me falling out of love with the game, again particularly at super and AB level.
However, while they still get big crowds up north, WR won't see they need to change anything.

@taniwharugby I not so worried about mistakes by refs at WC level, because I think there are very few, and anyone even suggesting corruption are idiots, it's more the nit picking that they have to do , as if a try is scored after a minor fumble etc there is a melt down in press and internet at test level if it against our team. A lot of it is the more professional the game , the more teams spend time on defence and so lose the indiviuality and skills we all love to see at times.

@Dan54 yep a big issue is the fanned defence so the game looks like league and it’s all about the collisions, top and bottom tackles with concussions a huge problem. If I never see another box kick and a lineout mail close to the line it will be too soon. The players at U20 level are now just gorillas and the game is becoming more size than skill driven. Suits the NH teams and WR keeps installing the same old leaders.
