@NTA I'd happily take 4 more years til the next Black Caps ICC Trophy!
I said after the last final it was as close as we'd ever get in my lifetime. I stand by that claim.
Surely T20 is a flakey enough format to fluke one eventually. Depends how long you are going to be around for though, it might still be quite some time.

Inaugural World Test Championship winners.
The rest is just shit 'n' giggles.
There is some element of truth to this.
Test cricket will always be the ultimate form of the game
……until they ban it which would send me into an absolute meltdown on the GOM thread.

There's a lesson in the local reaction here in Australia.
25 years ago and this would be front page news for days. Ticker tape parades, politicians queuing up for selfies, calls for a public holiday.
But now it feels like it has barely registered. Most people went 'we won? Sweet!' and went back to their lives. People should be recapping the highlights of the Cup, of which the centuries by Maxwell and Head should be considered in the 'all time' category. But I don't think they will. Or not to the level that Waugh in 99 or Ponting in 03 have been.
The fact that there's a T20 series starting this week is just the icing on the cake. As someone pointed out somewhere 'why are they celebrating? Hit the ice baths boys you've got a game in a few days!'.
The game has lost all meaning, all narrative in the endless quest for TV dollars. So the moments that actually do mean something are lost to all but the devoted few.

@barbarian thanks fella, interesting. ODI cricket has fallen away. It's a pity - was my gateway drug to the good stuff that is Tests. T20 is almost a different game these days. I do wonder if we'll see a split in players being 'Test' or 'T20' - where the skills are sufficiently different to justify different teams.
-
it's not just ODI though, it's everything.
Outside of AUs v England or Aus v India test series, there's very little hype for anything.
There's too much. And they are not even tours any more, it's heading to a country to play a T20 series, or a ODI series. Trying to get 3 tests when you aren't India, Aus or England is a fools errand as well.
How many times has a thread popped up here with the Black Caps an hour from starting a series somewhere and for most of us that's the first you hear of it?
The entire balance has been destroyed. And it will get worse as big money domestic T20 comps take on more and more importance. And a certain national board couldn't be happier.
The Australian cricket summer used to be fucking awesome. Now it's the Big Bash and a few tests that less and less care about.

And I'm amazed nobody in power seems to have noticed the problem.
As long as the money is flowing, they don't care

Inaugural Rugby World Cup winners too. One wonders why you still even have to play.
Rugby World Cups are just a bit of fun, we really only care about the Bledisloe

I think the CWC is still the pinnacle and the level of engagement from players, fans, media is still very high. There were a lot of people I work with that decided to work from home yesterday because of a late night watching.
The problem is the intervening period and all the “meaningless” ODI games.
I would love to see triangular series come back. It would require a rethink and shift in scheduling because of revenue etc, but they historically brought a level of competitiveness and excitement.

Despite the final being very low scoring for this day and age the problem is people are genuinely sick of it raining sixes every fucken game. Remember when Lance Cairns actually earnt those he tonked off Lillee ?
Nowadays cute paddle shots, ramps and mishits do the job with the small boundaries and big bats

@mariner4life this is such a great, and depressing, post.
I would add an additional problem, that test cricket is dying in every nation outside of the Money 3. Its being downgraded in importance by boards who aren't allowing schedules to reflect the physical stress it results in, they're increasingly scheduling 2 game series if they're scheduling them at all. The ECB fucked over the Ashes by playing it in a very short window finishing before August so they could play the God awful 100 in the school holidays.
I really worry about the future of test cricket. I really worry about the money being hoarded by 3 nations, I really worry that India in the form of the BCCI are a terrible protector of the game going forward.

You could pretty much predict without needing to check that the first Test of the summer would be at the Gabba around the second week of November...

@Dodge you only need to look at the Test Championship ladder for this latest iteration
22 tests for England, 19 for Australia, 18 for India.
NZ played 13For the next iteration, guess what?
England 22, Aus and India 19We're the big winners, jumping to 14
South Africa the bog losers, dropping from 15 to 12Oh look, in those numbers all of India, England and Australia will play 5 tests against each other. Everyone else can basically go fuck themselves.

Showing my age no doubt, but for me it goes Tests -> ODI and then not fucking interested.
