EPL 2023/2024

Saw the highlights of the Chelsea game and Palmer looked like he was being controlled by a FIFA 23 expert with the defenders being controlled by a novice - he just seems to have so much time to do exactly what he wants. I did presume that when City sold him, there must have been a reason - you can see why they sold Sterling, Zhinchenko and Gabriel Jesus - but maybe the bid was too generous for a novice and the player wanted to go. Palmer seems to play in his own bubble and not be affected by the general chaos around him.
That penalty fiasco reminds me of when Swansea won the League Cup by beating Bradford and Nathan Dyer wanted to get his hat-trick with a penalty when they were leading 3-0
That was an awful display of petulance - souring what was (and will probably always be) Swansea's only major trophy victory.

One of the buys of the season that is for sure.
And potentially young player of the season/golden boot!
England do have a real crop of young talent at the moment.
Top scorer list without including penalties - if the season stopped now, Watkins is my golden boot winner.
Watkins 19
Solanke 16
Haaland 16
Bowen 15
Foden 14
Son 14
Isak 13
Salah 12
Wood 12
Palmer 11
Nunez 11 -
And 10 assists for Watkins too on top of that.
It's been a European disaster across the board for English teams. Only Aston Villa down in the Conference league look like they have any chance of progressing.
-
@African-Monkey They could all be gone by this time tomorrow - in which case it is pretty certain (apparently) that Germany will get a 5th UCL place and Villa and Spurs and head to head to get 4th

Nunez 11Doesnt Palmer have something like 11 penalties to his name as well?
Watkins number 1 for sure, Solanke only has one penalty so you wouldnt have had to minus much out of his total lol
-
@bayimports Yes Palmer 20 goals with 9 pens, Solanker 17 with 1 pen, Watkins zero pens. Good performance by young Chris Wood there.
-
Not a good look for the EPL not getting the 5th place CL spot.
One of its biggest selling points is the strength of teams from No. 1 -20.
Supporters snare at leagues like Bundesliga calling it a farmer league (this year it is a ‘pharma’ league though!😉) but City are turning it into one as well.
-
@DaGrubster bad season but remember ….
EPL has had 3 diff teams win it in the last 5 years. That’s pretty impressive.
Has any other league even come close to that?
-
Any Everton fans here?
They are in dire straits when it comes to finances and look to be in danger of going into administration.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68835735
They have a potential buyer in a Miami based company called 777 but doesn’t look as though they have the funding in place.
-
You have to go a bit further back than that for 3 winners although you could say they have had 4 in 8 years then as you could include Leicester.
I know what you are saying but 4 in a row is unprecedented in the English top flight.
I hope that it does remain competitive. Maybe when Pep leaves, or if the 115 charges are proven it may make it more open again.
Spain have had 3 winners in 5 years - Barca, RM and athletico

Across next biggest leagues in Europe, not counting this year:
La liga: 3 different champs in the last three years (and last five)
Serie a: 4 different champs in the last four years (and last five)
Ligue 1: 2 in last 5 years, have to go back 7 years for a third
Bundesliga: 1 in the last 5, have to go back 15 years for three -
Ah, sorry thought you meant the EPL
-
Back in the day Liverpool x3, Nottingham forest x2 and Aston Villa x1, won it over 6 consecutive seasons between 76-82
-
@DaGrubster yeah I can see why - clear as mud as usual!
Regardless point stands that it’s poor result for the EPL to have none in SF and hence no 5th spot, but to have 3 different recent winners shows the strength of the league.
-
Yeah, it was a poor miss from Salah, I think it actually comes off his shin.
Feels like we are seeing the last moments of a Liverpool legend with Salah at the moment.
Atalanta are a pretty good side
Liverpool not really creating much.

I mean 3 diff teams win the big dog, the champs league
Aside from the other instance of EPL teams pointed out by @dogmeat, la liga almost did it between 2014 and 2018. All 5 years were won by either Barcelona or Real Madrid, but Athletico Madrid lost two finals (once in extra time and one on penalties) in that period. Winning either of those games would have meant the champions league was won three years in succession by three different Spanish teams. Over those 5 years, 7 of the possible 10 finalists spots were Spanish teams.
Athlecico Madrid have a particularly torturous relationship with the champions league - they've made three finals, and been drawn after full time in all of them, losing one after a replay, one after extra time and one after penalties. Basically the complete set of ways-to-lose-the-tie-breaker.
