Crusaders 2024

The narrative was developed to push Penny. He didn't handle many of the questions well. There were some simple answers he could have given that would have helped just push them to the side. He bit back or was abrasive instead. Some of the questions held merit. Afterall, he is one of the least sucessful coaches in Super Rugby history. That is a fact. Pouring fuel on that he is the coach of the most suceasful team in the comp's history. If he had responded to the questions by saying this has been a very difficult period. That he has a close and trusted working relationship with his team and management. He could have brought down the temperature of the interactions. Imagine if this was an EPL or even NRL coach. These questions would be weekly or even twice a week. You can't become the story because you react poorly. Using the audio from the hot mic was fair game.
-
The questions were fair they are legitimate questions most Crusaders supporters would like a proper answer too.
The reaction at the end tells me a fair bit as does they way he reacted and answered the questions.
To me it felt like he didn't want to take any real ownership for what has happened.
I am sick of social media and a lot are Crusaders supporters saying we are rebuilding etc inexperience etc, No there is enough experience in that squad who have won titles over the last 3 - 5 years to be better than 11th place. At least middle of the table.
It is time for the Crusaders to own up they fucked up appointing Rob Penny and are suffering for it,But we are going to see the same shit next year if Penny is still there as I don't think they will sack him, if they don't the board should fuck right off with him in 2026.
We need to clean out some coaches and some players and build again. -
Not suggesting by any means Penny has been perfect, but this has pretty much been 5%> in terms of outcomes.
The injuries are one thing, but even still, the amount of games they have lost in bizarre ways/have been very close is not something I think have ever seen before.
- Lost to the Tahs with two intercepts and a charge down
- Lost to the Tahs when the game was all but won
- Lost to the Brumbies after punching the ball dead
- Lost late to both the Hurricanes and Chiefs
- Lost to the Highlanders despite scoring four tries to two
- Lost a close one to the Reds
The only other defeats are away to the Force (Poor), and up in Fiji + Eden Park (3? combined home losses in the last two seasons)
The Crusaders sure have been their own worst enemies, but if you played this season 100 times, I am convinced this is the worst possible outcome.

Here’s the after interview comment for those that missed it
Penney comes out of this looking a lot better than the journalist
Agreed, especially when you see the full interview. It's embarrassing.
Just someone accidentally and awkwardly telling it like it is.
Non story. I hope Penney laughs about it in years to come down the pub with his mates.

I've never heard of the TVNZ journalist so don't know his background, but did see the Newshub clip when Penney replied to their questions. He was very brief with his answers.
Thomas Mead is one of the best broadcast reporters in the country. He is nornally a general news reporter and has done some top quality work. His stories on health and safety issues at Talley's were first class. He was recently awarded a top gong at the TV awards. Not generally a sport reporter, which makes me think he may have taken the hit of asking the questions to shield the sports reporters from the potential kick back from the Crusaders.

Yup absolutely. They have way too much experience in their squad to let a season get out of control like this. Whether it’s super rugby experience, All Blacks XV experience or All Black experience, the experience is all across the paddock and have more than most, if not all super rugby teams.
Penney should take the heat here but the players have to take the heat as well. There are a lot of injuries but all teams have to go through that. The Crusaders made the call to go and sign Owen Franks, Halfpenny and Crotty… they are the ones that went for experience so the recruitment/management have to wear that too. No one to blame but themselves and to be completely honest I don’t feel sorry for them. Welcome to every other teams reality for the last 7 or so years.

This bit from 1News is interesting
1News understands some senior players have struggled to get on to Penney’s wavelength due to, among other things, what they see as an inconsistent selection policy.
Maybe that's why he went gonzo about 'have you support of the changing room', because he doesn't or feels he doesn't.

@MN5 These sort of stupid mistakes and excuses are why many people are losing interest in Rugby. It is a professional game , administered poorly in places and stupid behaviour like Pennys is condoned. The game has many problems that need to be addressed urgently yet fans still defend it..

I am shocked....deeply shocked!!!
I've rung TVNZ to see whether they want to lead with this "Fan of other team has no sympathy" story in their 6 pm bulletin!

Not sure about that. There's an old saying that any publicity is good publicity - and rugby is a particularly bland sport, where anyone who puts his head over the media parapet can expect to get it shot off.
Didn't Tyson Fury's dad head-butt someone at a press conference last week?
Has that affected boxing's popularity?
-
@Chris-B It's affected Tyson Fury's popularity having his stupid father around haha.
On Penney, meh. He was annoyed at the questions a journalist was given to ask him, probably didn't deal with them as well as he should have but this stuff happens all the time in sport. No big deal.

Is that all you took out of that whole comment? Lol. Making a comment and hurting a Crusaders fans feelings, wouldn’t read about it! 😂

Is that the same 1News whose reporter was called a fluffybunny?
A lot of weasel room journalists afford themselves in the word 'understands'.
I thought the original questions were direct and reasonable. I thought Penney's answers were good and used an appropriate tone and language to soften the interview. The reported didn't have the competence to change tact and continued to provoke a bloke who didn't select the better course of action of saying "I think we've already discussed that".
