@barbarian god forbid a captain / coach tries to put positivity into his team after losing a close match in the first of 5 series.
So cringy.
Yeah from what I have heard that is probably Baz's gift. He fosters belief in those around him.

Was there in the good days and some bad days for the BCs, so knows how to chin up

I've rewritten this to how I think it should have gone to pass the @barbaran & @MN5 seal of approval:
@barbarian said in Ashes 2023:
Baz spoke first. He always goes first when we lose. He just said, “Lads, I’m immensely proud of the efforts that you’ve put in, because we are utter shit, especially compared to the Australians. We were so close to pulling off an unbelievable victory. We play such a shit brand of crickets, especially compared to the incomparable Australians. If we weren't as diabolically shit (especially compared to the Australians), the Australians wouldn’t have even had a chance for a regulation innings victory.
We were surprised by how defensive Australia were and how unwilling they were to play our completely piece of shit game that we play compared to the incredible, amazing, fantastic, joyful, world changing, life changing game that the Australians play. Obviously it’s worked for them this Test match. But we feel that with the way they’re playing at the moment, a pitch with a bit more movement would benefit us hugely. Baz said it after the game, “It feels like we’ve won, lads, because coming close is all we could ever do". I think its time to go and drink warm beer, sit under the clouds and just watch the amazing Australians now.
Of course it sounds weird because they won it, but I think if they’re honest, Australia will look at themselves and realise they should have won by an innings and 467 runs as they are that superior. If there’s any movement in the pitch at Lord’s, the way we’re playing compared to them is going to have no benefit to anybody, because we are that far behind Australia. The most awesomest cricket team in the history of the sport. God I loved Warney, what an incredible talent.
Much better.
Australia to win 5-0.

It's such tricky choice of which one of the Australian seamers to leave out.
I suspect Starc returns for Boland. Starc lengthens the batting a bit. His bowling seems to have pros and cons against Bazball. Starc is the mostly likely of all of the Australian attack to bowl an utterly unplayable 140kmph+ late inswinging yorker. He also seems the most likely of them to dish up something that can be deposited 20 rows back by someone batting aggressively.

@barbarian said in Ashes 2023:
In my mind I think Starc is a bit erratic, and something of a risk. Which is weird because he's taken 300+ wickets at 27.
Opening spells of either 5 overs, 2/16, or 2 overs 0/26 both seem possible to me
Wonder if England will bring in Mark Wood. Anderson, Broad, and Robinson is a very decent attack, but they're pretty similar in terms of pace.

Curiously, the WTC final pitch looked pretty green to start with and India picked their team accordingly and arguably Ashwin should have played. Selections will be interesting
-
I increasingly think all home games that the Black Caps play against India should be at the Basin Reserve and Seddon park. If a greenish pitch can make them leave out Ashwin, the Basin pre-match might even convince them to leave out Jadeja too...

Second test starting tomorrow (Wednesday) from 9pm on TVNZ DUKE and TVNZ+
-
1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Ollie Robinson, 10 Josh Tongue, 11 James Anderson
Josh Tongue replaces Ali.
Anyone know much about him? He’s played one Test against Ireland apparently

He took five wickets in that test.
But Ireland are shit.

Great toss for England to win.
Think Starc is the right call, on about a 55/45 balance. Boland is brilliant, but a fraction predictable for Bazball.
Kevin Pietersen rings the bell for the start of the day at Lords.
How good would he have been in the Bazball era ? Terrific player.

Just looked up... do we have some twat pitch invaders with orange paint?
Edit: Cricinfo says:
Broad from the Media centre end. Although there is a hold up. Two streakers have run on. With a orang powder paint. It's a Just Stop Oil protest. One has been tackled to the ground. He didn't get near a player. Jonny Bairstow ran the other one off the ground. Bairstow has left the ground to change as his whites have been soiled. The ground staff are out on the ground to clean up the paint residue. Broad and Warner are having a chat.
