What was the Blues out of interest?
Only team that hasn’t posted. Will keep an eye out. I’d say they would of had the most though.
-
Highlanders should be stoked with 12.5k. Top result and shows the franchise is working hard to engage with fans. For a mid-table finish with a team of nobodies those are great numbers.

Last 3 were 22k, 15k, 26k
The Whangarei game was ~14k I think? Then there was two low crowds against Aussies sides and a goodish crowd in terrible conditions v the Crusaders

So, the issue then isn’t really crowds, its that most teams are in stadiums three times too big for most of the games.
I think averaging between 10k to 15K in NZ is killing it tbh.
but, you know, you need 35,000 seats or the NZRU won't chuck you an AB test maybe once a year

@mariner4life this ^
i'm assuming its worth it, that one game minus the extra cost to host
i cant help thinking filling a smaller one every week might generate more buzz and have a greater positive in the long run -

-
im really not sure what the requirements are, i feel a couple of elevated camera positions shouldnt be too hard
-
@Kiwiwomble assuming you are looking at night games, there are minimum requirements to be able to air it in HD I believe.

i cant help thinking filling a smaller one every week might generate more buzz and have a greater positive in the long runThere aren't smaller stadiums though. Building boutique smaller venues would be very expensive, and not worth it. Stadiums are money pits. Rugby Park in Invercargill is shot, Yarrow Stadium has been struggling with its upgrade. Plenty of other issues around the country. The scalability of London stadia across the city is a nice example, just very unrealistic for NZ. As mentioned city's like Dunedin, Hamilton and Christchurch want to hold on to All Black opportunities. While other events are also utilised at the venues. NZ would go septic if there was a national stadium in Auckland that go all the big events

Is anyone going to turn up to watch the Hurricanes and Blues thrash the Rebels and Drua this weekend? What are crowd numbers required to turn profits?
I would think Drua fans might come out in good numbers in Auckland. Their first game at Eden Park.

Wellington teams love losing money.
It’s not unheard of for a team to make the final and yet not manage to break even financially, while last year the Hurricanes made the playoffs, were beaten in the quarterfinals by the Brumbies in Canberra and posted a $1.4m loss.
The Brumbies have been a perennial fixture in the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs, but they haven’t been able to finish in the coveted top two spots to secure more than one home knock-out fixture, and they lost a combined $490,000 in 2022 and 2023.

The average attendance for each NZ team in Super Rugby has been finalised below. I miscalculated the Canes one initially because I factored in too many games.
Blues: average attendance of 21k
Hurricanes: average attendance of 16.1k
Chiefs: average attendance of 14.2k
Crusaders: average attendance of 12.6k
Highlanders: average attendance of 12.5k -

It also looks visually displeasing to the viewer because having a half empty Cake Tin or Eden Park despite having a moderate crowd looks bad compared to if you had that same crowd filling out a smaller venue like they do in the North.
