Rugby World Cup general discussion

@Bones let's hope we have the right alt strip aye...white, not grey.
-
-
@Bones Not convinced that that pass was forward. The camera angle isn't good and the ball seems to leave the fullback's hands backwards.
Although it's true what they say about French broadcasters, South Africans can hardly complain about that as their own broadcasters are just as bad or worse.

@MiketheSnow loved it. Right in my wheelhouse.

So after years of the NH blathering on about how reds should be red, change is coming because it's fucking up the game. Yes red should be red, but accidents should not. The traffic light cards have been suggested on this forum for years. Fucking slow arse fluffybunnies

Two things
-
In the case of Steward, he would still have got red after 10 mins of deliberating IMHO
-
If the YC is deemed to be RC worthy, then they're gone for good and down to 14 for the remainder of the match
This differs from Super Rugby, and is IMHO the best scenario
-
-
I'm a fan of the yellow upgrading to red by TMO
Really speeds up the game. It gets so tiresome watching 12 replays while we stop the game to see if someone might have made head contact.
Don't mind if it's a 20 min red card, or an entire game one, as you would have to assume the TMO gets it right with all the review time. -

I prefer 20 minutes. Just makes sense. Team gets penalised for quarter of the game (so "targeted" cards aren't worth it) and the game gets to be a competition in proper still. Maybe make it that you then can't make subs in the last 20 if it happens then, but that opens up an avenue for more injuries.
-
-
The only problem with a straight RC, and you're off for good, for anything other than obvious foul play is that we've seen some RCs deemed to not meet the RC threshold by the judiciary after the fact. That isn't good enough from the officials/WR.
I doubt the TMO will be asked to review a RC and recommend that it should only be a YC. But they should, if applicable.

Sky, the New Zealand broadcast rights holder for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, has announced free-to-air coverage of this year’s tournament will screen on Prime.
As well as 48 matches broadcast live on Sky Sport, 12 matches will be broadcast on free-to-air channel Prime (six matches live).
Sky said live free-to-air coverage includes a semifinal, bronze final and grand final.

Figured this was about as good a place as any, didn't get past number 5 on my first read.

Unless the ABs win the coin toss...
is there still a coin toss if they're the host nation? do they get the home game by default?
-
@Kiwiwomble not in the RWC, I think all teams are essentially 'visitors'.

Coin toss for changing room and 'home' status. I think the toss is done well in advance except for finals.
IF (big IF) we meet France in the Final we owe them from 2011 where they won the toss but let us play in Black.

@Crucial Only if our away strip is white. If it's grey, absolutely not!
We should make our away strip sky blue with white shorts and red socks. That'll fuck them

@Stargazer I hope they have a good tournament, and twat rassie STFU

Nika Amashukeli (Georgia),
Good to know WR are continuing their referee development programme at the World Cup.
-
@booboo well Pickerill gets to go too, so yeah...

Incredible.
WR doing representation and development alongside quality. The Barnes lesson was not learned.
Jordan Way? At least he's only an AR but if there is one high profile ref around at the moment that has zero feel for the game and produces randomness like farts it is this guy. He's worse than Pickerell and that's not something to be proud off. -
England is the new France by dominating the RWC ref panel.
With the lopsided draw the ABs are more likely to get the English or Aussie refs in the QFs.

Barnes I don't mind (because we know what to expect) but Pearce and Dickson scare me somewhat. Seem to ref a different style to what our players are used to.

Yep
Land based game not flying
-
If rugby were cluedo it was Barnes, in the stadium, with the faulty whistle
Reckon this is the strongest panel of refs yet although not sold on the Georgian.

In fairness, he's improving

Only one French ref, that has to be a positive.

I think 24 is too many, but if they could a find a simple format for 20 that would help grow the game and reward a better international standard.
-
Let's get the timing of the draw right first before worrying about expansion.
-
one assumes that 24 teams means 6 pools of four. With 6 pool winners and two best runner-ups going through.
Which will make the pool stages even more irrelevant, and see the minnows cop harder poundings as the lower ranked sides try and get their points diff up as high as possible.
