FIFA World Cup 2022

@NTA yeah, I agree. There's a lot of theatrics and the euros and south Americans have perfected it. You can include Central America in that too. It's so distasteful to watch but I don't know how they could get rid of it because it have to be video review.

That was a decent effort. Messi was the star. Don’t think Argentina are taking home the trophy. Will this be a kiss of death comment…?

I agree that I don't think they are good enough. So I negated your kiss of death comment.

I don't think there's a clear favourite at the moment, everyone has had a turn at looking a bit rocky. Still waiting for a team to really find their groove and get going. I reckon playing a big quarter final might be the thing that kick starts a team, so a Netherlands Argentina qf could well be the exact medicine the winner needs to get rolling.

Aussie making a good fist of this.
What???
Australia were shit compared to Arg. Proper shit.

@NTA they had their moments. I think at times they got themselves into trouble by not moving the ball quicker, which obviously resulted in the second goal. Some of it is composure and not playing at the highest levels and expectations all the time. That final touch or decision making. You could see the panic and poor aerial control near the end. Unless your putting it into the box, which was poor to say the least, get the ball on the deck. I know that is not really strategy but allows for a more controlled game. When I came to the States I learnt so much about the game from the Mexicans. More control, short passing and movement.
But good effort from your team. Every other nation is getting closer to the pack. Just look at the small number of Euro teams left.

@broughie knowing fuck all about the strategy or formations: at times it seemed the Aussies were making easy inroads. Not sure Argentina's defence is up to it against better attacking teams
So you know fuck all.
Let’s just leave it there.

Time to shut the Fern down then.

One way of looking at it.
However, you could also argue that the presence of humourless, miserable fluffybunnies with a superiority complex is basically Peak Fern.
Almost like Baron has rejoined us.

Happy to stick my hand up on the topics of soccer, expensive cars, and being a curmudgeon. You've got those covered nicely.

Oz should have taken them on sooner
Like the Saudis did -

What’s gotten into you today?
I thought the aussies were decent today. Def the 2nd best side, but they got into some pretty good spaces on the flanks. Where they sucked was their delivery into the box. From both corners and crossing in general play, it was abysmal. Over-hit almost every time, loopy and long. So wasteful
Argentina def created better scoring chances, but they’ll need to be more accurate than that against better teams
Clear gap in skill level and speed between the sides, and Messi obviously the standout as always
What a fucking run by that Aussie bloke though, helluva saving tackle to stop him becoming a national hero. Reckon the Aussie keeper might have shouted him a beer if he’d scored…

So, we (Nederland) have to play the dirty cheats (Argentina) in the QF!
When supporting the men in orange on Saturday, I'll take full inspiration from the 1978 World Cup Final and it's home reffing! Mrs SG already fears for the tv! Mind you, Argentina still had its dirty military junta at the time and all talk was that they owned the ref (who might have feared for his life if the Argies didn't win). And then the Argie timewasting & fake injuries! Grrrrrrrrrr
Yes, I still hold grudges (even though I can't remember the game). I'll watch that Final this week and will wear my orange jersey for the QF. I fully expect that game will mean the Dutch' exit from this year's tournament, so I won't need it for a SF or F. I don't think they're very good, this year.
Yet, I hope the team takes it's inspiration from other World Cup matches against the Argies, because that 1978 Final was the only time the Argies beat the Netherlands at a World Cup. A repeat of the 1998 QF would be sweet!
