Classy by Hawthorn really. While Mitchell wanted to go, and they do need to get rid of same age and salary, Mitchell did just win their B&F, and is still a top quality player. They could have tried to push a lot harder.
Mitchell moves to play a season or two for the Weagles, then transition in to coaching.
It does look like the Hawks are bringing in a couple of top quality young midfielders to replace him.

Rumor has it , Hawthorn players have been playing for less than their true value for some time to keep the side under the cap , and now they are throwing big money to bring in some gun kids , the older guys who could've got bigger money elsewhere, feel a bit put out and are not too impressed ..

read a report that Jordan Lewis was told he was up for trade, so spoke to Melbourne, it was all good to go, and then Hawthorn backed out, so he's stuck at a club that wanted to move him on (despite him probably being paid unders for years). This could be a bad off-season for the Hawks.

That's a great way to ensure morale is sky-high. Encourage guys to take less in order to become premier winning players and then use that headroom not to reward them, but to entice others. Brilliant culture emerging there.

AFL was once a game that prided itself on its loyalty, with players very rarely moving clubs. Now club champions are moved on before they are finished. Guys like Harvey, Lewis, Mitchell, and even Stevie J and Paul Chapman would formerly play out their careers as one-club men. Now they spend the twilight of their playing days in unfamiliar jerseys.
Formerly good player, now standard Brisbane error maker Pearce Hanley to the Suns in a deal based around swapped draft picks with Port (it's very complicated).
Tom Liberatore gently chided by his club after getting snapped on the piss and playing AFL for the Vietnam Swans. Also sporting the worst haircut in professional sport

Good to see the AFL has asked for a please explain from the clubs on the Ty Vickery deal.
So a touted 3 year $400K per deal suddenly turns into a 2 year $500K per with a guaranteed extension for a 3rd year for $200K.
The 2 year deal had a better compensation pick than the 3 year one.

And Jimmy Bartel retires. Pretty handy set of awards, 3 Premierships, 2 All Australians, 1 Brownlow and 1 Norm Smith.
Sounds like he might have been given the word, and has chose calling time rather than go on elsewhere.

I think clubs dont always enjoy doing it , but they try and trade off some older champions while they still have some value , usually to add a bit more youth as a balancing act to their list,
The older guys can sometimes add much needed experience at another club , so it can be a trade that is beneficial to both.

The confirmation of Deledio wanting to go to GWS is pretty interesting. Cats couldn't afford him without getting Motlop off the books.
The fact GWS are apparently willing to give up a high first round for it is even more remarkable. Deledio is a good player but has had achillies issues and other soft tissue problems which isn't a good sign for a player his age.

Deledio has pretty much been transformed from a midfielder to a classy half forward because of those issues,
Richmond will give that pick to Geelong for Caddy , ( apparently )
who they both wanted to swap in the first place but couldnt quite get it done

Geelong lose a couple in Vardy and Caddy.
And the Dogs take a massive punt on Travis Cloke. But it cost them fuck all.

Kicks off Thursday night with the annual Tigers v Carlton clash. Interesting first weekend building up to Geelong v Hawthorn on Monday, that should be massive.
You would imagine the 2 Perth teams and the Hawks will all feature at the pointy end. From the rest, will Geelong's free agency pick ups put them straight back to the top? Can the Tigers actually progress? Can North's old list do enough for them to be relevant?
Who will be the first team to lose to Essendon? Who will be the least-worst out of the Saints, Lions, Gold Coast and Carlton. Can the GWS make the 8?

GWS Flag faves after trade period, Doggies should go alright again.
Swans, West Coast, Adelaide, Geelong will all be thereabouts with the 'home' advantages they enjoy.Hawks are interesting - they'll have a freshened up game plan, should scrounge into the 8.
North - they might fall to bottom 4 - seriously cooked.
Who's in then - Melbourne look to have sharpened up through the trade, St Kilda went close.
Richmond still have issues even with their good ins.
Port, the Blues, Collingwood, GC, Bombers all look to be making up numbers.

@mariner4life funnily enough, your top 8 wasn't unrealistic. Tigers were supposed to be on the up, got found out. No Fyfe, no Freo - they went kaboom!
Port were awesome in 2014, but everyone caught up with their fitness and they were found out to be all Kamikaze or nothing.
Collingwood was your most dubious call...I would suggest.I'll go early on 2017

The funny thing with predicting , and i listen to the so called media experts here in melbourne,
so much of it is reactionary ,
I look back to when Brisbane had their golden era, if you wind the clock back a year or two before that , no one saw that coming ,
Similar thing to Geelong , if you go back a year or two before that , all the experts were predicting ST Kilda to be the dominant side with all their top draft picks they had picked up , Geelong meanwhile were developing a similar age list but werent appearing to get the same cream at the draft so were going through a bit more unnoticed .
Now everyone is saying GWS with all their young talent , and its hard to deny that at this stage , will be interesting

I reckon he had a tap on the shoulder ,
Be interesting if it gets offered to Mitchell and Cotchin who tied second and whether they would accept it anyway , not quite the same getting one like that .
