Did Guptils T20 career end last night?
Guppy and Aaron Finch are only a couple of months apart age-wise and this tournament might well be the end of the road for both of them. Guppy could still hold down a squad spot, but you'd have to wonder if he'd want to.
I did kind of wonder whether he'd be a better option than Mark Chapman, but you could also bat Mitch Jr. at 6. The bell is definitely tolling on Guppy.

I can't see the attraction with Chapman. I don't recall him ever doing anything meaningful in black with the bat. When is Mitch Jr back? Maybe some pinch hitting at 6 by Guppy would be worth a crack. Definitely nothing to lose if its a case of either or with Chapman

Also loved the quote from one of the Aussie comms in the first innings when we were on track for 200 -"well we all knew it's a 200 pitch".
It was interesting one of the other Aussie commentators (might have been Gilly) was saying he was surprised as he didn't think it was a 200 pitch as he thought it was too dry.

Just as a brilliant a result the next day... so many things went right that usually go wrong against Oz. Catching, the Warner dismissal, referrals, etc..
As a reflection on just how much getting (a) thrashed in Australia or (b) the Aussies pulling off a jammy run chase from nowhere has affected the consciousness... during our last two overs with the bat I kept wanting 3-4 sixes in a row to 'give us a good chance'. Recent results were so embedded in my brain that on reflection I was subconsciously sure, that whatever we scored, that it would somehow be ten runs short
I wonder what that result will do to the Black Caps self belief for the rest of the tournament.
-
@Donsteppa you’re right about so many little things just going right for us, I would even include Zampa dismissing little Kane helped us at the right time
-
We struggle normally on the other Australian surfaces so while I will celebrate that result I am still not confident moving forward. Bloody great result though, an absolute smashing

I don’t think the surface has much to do with it, more a case of that extremely irritating “little brother” complex we have against Australia in cricket.
What a super win and what a start to the tournament but let’s not get carried away. T20 can be a horribly inconsistent game.

Wow. Just wow, that's a fucking statement performance and some. Absolutely annihilated them in every single facet of the game. Game plan, in game tactics, performance, that's one of the most dominant performances we've ever put together against the Aussies. A 20 run win in a T20 is comprehensive. An 89 run victory in a T20 WC in the Aussies back yard in front of 40k fans is just absurd. God I enjoyed that.
Watching Allen dismantle Aussies best ever fast bowling trio one by one was honestly better than sex. 14, 15, 17, thanks for fucking coming. Baz V2.0, incredible eye, fast hands, and can throw even the world's best way off their game with some incredible shots.
Then we were just relentless after that. Rotating the strike with boundaries littered in between. Absolutely world class innings from Conway with multiple cameos to support him on the way. The 6 from Neesh on the last ball to get us to 200 was just the perfect cherry on top.
Finch really missed a trick not bowling Zampa and Maxwell in tandem early on. It was obvious from early on that Allen and Conway were very much enjoying the pace, taking that away from them should have been the first thing he did. Not bowling Maxwell at all was even stupider. Poor captaincy.
Then we were basically faultless in the field. The catch from Phillips was incredible. Warners dismissal was hilarious, couldn't happen to a more annoying bloke. Then bowling Santner and Sodhi together early was smart captaincy. Make them make the pace on the ball, if they do get going then we can go back to the quicks with plenty of runs still in the bank. Turns out making all the pace isn't that easy, and Santner and Sodhi did the business before our quicks came and finished the job.
Also loved the quote from one of the Aussie comms in the first innings when we were on track for 200 -"well we all knew it's a 200 pitch". Really? Someone must have forgotten to tell the Aussie batsmen that. The comms really tried to keep the hyperbole about the Aussies going as long as they could, e.g. Marsh hits a 6 and they scream "SHOT OF THE TOURNAMENT!", but were deflated by the end of it. Just beautiful stuff.
Just. Fucking. Owned. After all the misery they've given us over the years I'm going to enjoy the fuck out of that for some time, in case you couldn't tell.
Is @NTA’s favourite cricketer a specialist batsman now ?
Batting three and not bowling at all. Talk about reinvention ! What a class player !

I always have the mute button on whenever Ian Smith comes on. Can't stand the prick.
Well done BCs, that was a perfect performance.
You must watch a lot of sport in silence
I mute the Aussie cricket commentators. They are just unlistenable.

Who is it ? Gilly, Hussey and M Waugh ?
I quite like Smithy even if his kiwi and Hawkes Bay bias borders on absolutely ridiculousness at times.

Don't mind him so much as a rugby sideline commentator. Insufferable when commentating on cricket games involving the BCs.

It was a bloody enjoyable win but it is also T20 and sometimes one thing can swing the whole shape of the game. If Allen’s onslaught hadn’t come off (and it won’t always) Captain Kane would have dragged down the run rate and we’d have been lucky to get 150-160.
If Warner hadn’t down a clown act to get out (pure comedy) the Oz batting shape could have also been much different.
Not saying it was only luck just that luck can play a big part sometimes. -

Yeah, I think it was 170 pitch, and the way Aussie struggled to get going showed that. Allen's innings at the top gave us an extra 30 - 40 runs, and Conway showed a huge amount of class and composure to make sure we capitalised on that and got to 200. As good as Conway was, Allen was the key difference between the two sides in the end.

Warner's a fucking tin arse and rides his luck all the time, nice to see it run out for once. We just wiped the fucking floor with them in a WC in front of 40k baying Australians. It doesn't get much better than that, just enjoy it man.

I did. Said so at the beginning of the post.
I just don’t buy into it being much of a sign. -

Has @Virgil hacked your account ?
Not sure you can refer to a guy with a record as impressive as Warners as a “tin arse” no matter what his personality is like.
But yeah, in saying that I’m certainly enjoying the victory !
